T.M. Krishna at Kanchi Mutt, Bangalore on 17.10.2010
Vocal: Sri. T.M. Krishna
Violin: Sri. H.K. Venkataram
Mridangam: Sri. Tiruvarur Bhaktavatsalam
Kanjira: Vyasa Vittal
1. Rama neepai tanaku [S]- Kedaram - Adi - Tyagaraja
2. Veenabheri [RS] - Abheri - Adi - Muthuswamy Dikshitar
3. Sri Kamakoti peetashithe - Saveri - Adi - Mysore Sadashiva Rao
4. Shankari Neeve [RS]- Begada - Rupakam - Subbaraya Shastry
5. Himigiri Tanaye - Shuddha Dhanyasi - H.N. Muthiah Bhaagavatar
6. Raagam Taanam followed by Punniyam Oru Koti [NT]- Keeravani - Adi (2 kalai) - Periasami Thooran
Neraval at: Annai Kaamaakshi polay anbe vadivaai vandaar
7. Bhaja Govindam - Ragamalika - Adi - Sri Adi Shankara
8. Govardhana giridhara - Darbari Kaanada - Adi - Narayana Theertha(?)
9. Raama janaardhana - Shankarabharanam - Adi - Muthuswamy Dikshitar
10. Mangalam - Sourashtram - Adi - Tyagaraja
The concert took some time to start, what with Bhaktavatsalam arriving late, and a certain kitten which had to be taken off the premises by Krishna himself, but once it did, the audience was in for a treat. A nice start with the Kedaram. Pleasant and soulful.
The Abheri was interesting. He sang it in the old sampradaya, not the Nagumomu version of the raagam that sounds dangerously close to Karnataka Devagandhari. Was pleased with the choice. A few good phrases of swarams as well.
The Begada was a delight. Just wish the raagam were a bit longer. The swarams were unhurried and all sung in the first speed. This was a good thing. Some excellent phrases in the mandara sthaayi. I'm sure there were a few phrases with the whole aarohanam sung in the mandara sthaayi itself. Krishna's range always impresses me.
He sang Keeravani with alternating raagam and taanam. A very nice rendition of the krithi. Robust Krishna style neraval.
The tukkudas were breezy.
On the accompanists, H.K.Venkataram was strictly satisfactory. Bhaktavatsalam was energy personified. The thani from him and Vyasa Vittal was brilliant. Some really good nadai bedham.
Overall, a really good concert.

It did sound like Shankarabharanam. But it was all in plain notes. Sounded very western actually.

The intrepid kitten was either very much a rasika, or very devout (kanchi muTT) or very stubborn, and tried to sneak in several times, with the guard throwing it out each time.
In swarakalpana for the bEgaDa song, he used mandra sthAyI n-d-p-m-g-r and mandra Sa and even the anumandra niSAda once.

Future Generations will tag this TMK concert as the Natty Kitty Kacheri in their archives.
Did any one check whether the cat was wanting to listen to the concert ?

Someone should study what CM does to kittens! A few months back there were a few kittens around Raga Sudha hall too -- Nick mentioned that one kitten got stuck in the two-piece door etc...keerthi wrote:The intrepid kitten was either very much a rasika, or very devout (kanchi muTT) or very stubborn, and tried to sneak in several times, with the guard throwing it out each time.

I'm pretty sure the kitten wanted to listen! It was even walking on the stage itself just when the artists had assembled on the dais!
@srikant1987: Ah yes, my bad! Thanks for the correction.

It is sad that many times we drift away from the important topic and go on discussing irrelevant things- like in the present thread, we have forgotten about TMK concert and go on discussing about kitten. Similarly we take up some words - few a few etc and go on dicussing. We forget the purpose of the forum.

Yes keerthi.TMK's voice range is becoming amazing but I only wish it should be in direct proportion with his music.
Heard him last week in Sringeri mutt.kripasankari st;W.mambalam(he sang @ venkatnarayana Rd.mutt also)
A highly rajasic display of vocal prowess. He was full of energy.FYI there was an RTP in Charukesi apart from Vazhimaraithirukuthe in Todi with a very fast neraval @ utruparkave, and there was this song in Kambodhi that he sang beautifully (what happened to your other leg?handicapped?)what song is this?it was in kanda chapu.
