It was a wonderful concert. A very classical affair from the beginning and each piece rendered with a lot of punch of weight. Each piece was carefully chosen and rendered appropriately. The perfect beginning invoking Lord Vinayaka in srI rAgam was just the way it should have begun. With a quick dEvagAndhAri, the elaborate mAyAmALavagauLa was having the right measure of quick and leisurely phrases in an apt mix to fit the kriti that came.
srI nAtAdi guruguhO was rendered with elaborate round of neraval at 'mAdUrya gAnAmruta pAnO'. The quick fast paced sAranga with a few really catchy sangatis lead to the next elaborate piece.
kIravANi was given ample time and elaborate treatment. The AlApanai was very classical and soaked with rAga bhAvam. The kriti was rendered with elaborate neraval and svarams at 'vasudalO nIdu vara bhaktalaku'.
The nATTaikuranji was just tooo good. The AlApanai was stunning and rendered with the required punch albeit with the nuances of the rAgam kept intact all the way. The tanam was very nice as well. The pallavi was rendered well with elaborate neraval and svarams. The rAgamAlikA pAsuram had very classical rAgam chosen and rendered with a certain completeness that one feels only with such rAgams.
The accompanists were very good and played very appropriately for the concert. They kept themselves in the right proportion and also portrayed their responses in a equally enjoyable fashion as the main artist.
It was a very enjoyable and classical concert fitting to the occasion as well.

"A marathon of perfection" --- my words to Bharath at the end of the concert.
Worth mentioning that the RTP lasted about an hour. It really was a proper RTP!
My feeling is that Sumitra has achieved/attained a new level, and a pretty high one two. I won't make the mistake of expecting her to always be at this peak (well, not for another decade or so
) but it really says a lot about what we can expect from her in the future.
It was a great team-effort concert too, and I particularly enjoyed Bombay V Anand's personal creativity.
A fantastic concert that I enjoyed enormously

Bharath - thanks for that succinct and evocative review.
The song list itself brings to mind and ear an incredible experience.
And that Vasantha thillana has always been a favourite of mine. R Vedavalli's commercial release has an explosive rendition, but haven't heard too much of it in recent times from others.
Hope I can make to Chennai this Margazhi and catch a concert or two of this musician.

I have heard only once an exclusive sumithra concert ,most of the time I keep wondering that she is into too much of vocal support role. She has a very emotive voice with lot of sowkhyam. Bombay Anand , I think should be the same young violinist who played beautifully for our prashant concert in besantnagar a year or two back. R Sankaranarayanan a leftie is a really top class artist . In short must have been a great team and a great concert.

Is V Sumithra the same person as Sumithra Vasudev?

Yes... she is.
Let me now ask: is it Sumitra or Sumithra? I seem to have been making a mistake.

Was this in the memory of Dilip - the history prof in IIT -M ? He taught amongst other things the Indian National Movement. I still remember him singing Bhavayami in front of Divya cafe opposite the workshop. A real connoisseur of carnatic music.

Nick,
It isn't that easy, as you know. Some Sumitra's drop the 'h'! Well, some Srinivasans are Sreenivasans and others Shrinivasans! Ah, which one is which??

Krishnamoorthy (Krishnamoorthi, Krishnamoorti, Krishnamurti, Krishnamurthi, Krishnamurthy) is also a problem sometimes

And we haven't even started! Just take Subramaniam, for instance...Nick H wrote:No more! Stop it... Please!

r-t,
I thought about it too (a name which gets an awful number of -'well, that's not how I spell my name!' protests). And, the kerala version is 'mony' (mOnE, moni!). As for pronouncing the name, there are variations too--suppiramaNian for instance!
