Curious headline, as most of the article seems to be in favour of recording!

Exactly!
'Great violin VidvAn Changes His Mind' would have been more of a fitting title? ;)

To be recorded or not to be...
That's the question...

Says the 'recordee':
I want a stampede around the hall,
Throngs of people inside too, their
undivided attention, yes! Let them take
With them my mesmerizing music,
Then dash to the nearest music store,
Buy all that I've recorded--
NOW,
Chant after me--
Copyright, copyright, copyright,
Copyright, copyright, copyright...

The recorder:
The recordee, he could be an awardee,
The acme of performing skills--but
If he frowns on us, let's explain--
Neither pirates nor exploiters are we,
Nurturers of your art are what we are--
We fill the halls, applaud, nod our heads
In praise, lavish balEs and sabhAshes
Stopping us may result in dwindling crowds,
Lesser accolade and attendance--we do
Play a part in your career, don't forget....

To be recorded or not,
That's the question...

Much depends on the artist's understanding that he may not be capable of giving his best in ALL of his concerts. So one never knows which one will turn out great . And Recording ( approved by them of course ) is the only way to ensure that the Particular effort does not go waste . Let us understand . In 100 years time Semmangudi will be remembered more for his airport Concert than any of his commercial releases .

So my vote is for the artist to authorise recording of each and every one of their concerts for posterity .

Lalgudi Jayaraman quips, “I often say that technology is so advanced that it is quite likely my performance this evening was aired yesterday.”
:o I still would like to hear his recordings after he has finished playing!
