I entered when he was mid poorvikalyani. I was inquisitive about the boy since he was introduced with lot of hype in Ananthapadmanabaswami temple at Adyar a few years ago. Later I was witnessing his timid and introvert reactions in Carnatic idol. I also saw a few programmes in Podigai promoted by Isai mazhalai Ramji where the boy was singing kalapana swarams for cine numbers; I was really sorry that a talent was going waste.
Most fortunately nothing of the sort has happened. The boy's broken voice has surprisingly a base voice a rarity today. He sang an excellent todi alapana and preferred to sing songs in navaneetham which even the stalwarts would not dare to do. His kalapramana is correct with urgency at times in neraval. Kalpana swarams were rendered with some difficulty at some minute thala kanakku. He is also a little self conscious and keeps sipping warm drink from the flask; keeps worrying about the sruti and fiddling the sruti box when not needed. But overall the performance was far superior than that of the so called veterans. The boy is a rising star and with the present kind of focus he will bloom in the carnatic field. Anantharaman! congrats; you sing well. please indicate before each song the raga with a brief alapana instead of starting the song abruptly.
Rahul's violin was a true support because his mike was a little low; had it been a senior he would have spoilt the show by ordering increase in his mike volume. Thank God nothing of this sort happened. Suryanarayan's mruthangam was excellent. (Sarva lahoo?!)
A very gratifying concert. Parents! kudos!
