yes, that is sankirnam... 6*3=18/2 beats = 9.
I'm just surprised that he played sankirnam... ever since Upendransir and Harisankar passed away, that nadai has been literally dying. They were the pioneers in exploring the potential of that nadai. Nowadays, only the mrudangists in Upendransir's school play that nadai with some frequency. I remember in August 15th I attended a concert of Ranjani/Gayathri at KGS, Neyveli Narayanan played a scintillating sankirnam that day, remniscient of Upendransir's style.
Just my two cents.

vocalist,
Manirangu alapana was good, though certainly not the best I have heard. The accompanists were good individually. The percussionists - Sri Satish Kumar and Sri Purushottam played together as a team.
sankirnam,
I agree with what you are saying ..... its very rare that one gets to hear sankIrNa naDai these days.
In the past one year, I have heard sankIrNa naDai played in concerts by Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Sri Karaikkudi Mani and Sri Neyveli Narayanan. Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman played it in KGS in Sep during the sapta swara ragamalika pallavi concert of Sri Ravikiran (Chitravina).

Sorry for a duh question - but how is Sankirna Nadai different from Tisram...to clarify further, all the other nadais are prime numbers (all right, except for Chatusra but there is no 2 matra nadai) , except for sankeernam.
I vaguely remember having this discussion sometime on sangeetham so my apologies in advance for the repetition.
I am waiting for one of the moderators to move this to the laya section!
Vijay

Yes, I was there too for Ravikiran's concert in September, I really liked the theme of the pallavi and the ragas he chose. I just wish that he could also have done each line in a different nadai as well. That would make it a lot more interesting.
Vijay, Sankirnam has to follow patterns of 9. Tisram is 3, so you would have several possible speeds in tisram. You can have 3 matras per aksharam, 6, or 12. Sankirnam, as Upendransir formulated it, is either 9 divided over 2 aksharams, or 9 in one aksharam altogether. This is how I have learned the nadai. It is also rare to find this nadai being played becuase it demands great thalam control by whoever is putting thalam. A simple exercise to acquaint yourself with sankirnam is to start with tisram... saying "tha-ki-ta" in each beat, then tisram 2nd speed, "thakita thakita" in 1 beat (6 per beat). Now, say "thakita thakita thakita" over 2 beats.... this is sankirnam, and this is how Upendransir developed the nadai in his own thanis. Just my opinion, but nothing can match his formulation. I heard UKS's sankirnam that day, and as much as I am a rabid fan of him, I thought his sankirna nadai was rather flat compared to Upendransir's formulation.
And KRM sir played sankirnam? That is interesting... I would like to hear his version of it someday.
