Sanjay at Tamizh Isai sangam-Raja Annamalai Hall 29.10.2010
Sanjay Subramaniyan
Mannargudi Easwaran
Nagai Muralidharan
Sundarkumar
Another brilliant performance by SS at TIS. TIS celebrates 68th year. I recently heard
Somu's electrifying Pantuvarali "Aalangattil Adum" which he rendered in this venue with
LGJ somewhere mid 60's. I could not stop thinking sitting in this TIS.
With no balcony, TIS is well constructed auditorium with super acoustics.
1) Siddhi vinayakane- Kalavati-Kavi kunjara barati
2) 2 mins alapana in Darbar followed by
Shri veNugopala Deval nE vA - Koteeswara Iyer.
Swaram in "VeNugopala"
3) 4 mins alapana in Sriranjani followed by
"Jadhiyilie madangalile" - Ramalinga Swamy Tiruarutpa.
4) His favourite "Sahana" alapana followed by
"Tillai ambalattanai Govinda Rajanai"-Gopala Krishna bharati"
Swaram in the same line.
5) Main-Simhendramadhyamam- "Ikaparamenum iru ulagengum"-Papanasam sivan
Neraval in "guha saravaNa bala" and swaram.
6) "ramanukku mannan mudi"-Hindolam-AruNachala kavi
7) RTP-Kambodhi-Palliavi in "Ananda nadanam Adinan dhadheem dheem dhadheem ena kanaka
sabayil"
8 ) Oorrile kANi illai followed by Brindavanam iduvo - sudhadhanyasi
9) Tillana-Sindu bhairavi- interluding.. "endha veLayum kandha veLai"
10) English Note
11) vAzhiya senthamizh-Madhyamavathi, Surutti....
3 minutes standing ovation for Sanjay till the screen slowly closed in front of us
displayed the mood of rasikas.
Sanjay's energy, despite the previous day's concert at Bheemasena Garden, did not
deteriorate and a mixture of ragas lifted the concert. Nagai is another man of
energy. He played for Sanjay the previous day and on that day monring, he played for
Mah Ramachandran at Music Academy and evening again he was playing for sanjay here.
vAli of Violin played volleys of phrases in his instrument. His kamobodhi return was
full of "sabhash's". The concert was mentioned as "2 hours" but he took 2.5 hours.
Sajay did not sing GKB mudra saraNam in "Tillai" kriti. Actually this kriti was in
surutti. But he took sahana. In the swaram, he took tillai ambalattanai and
Govindarajanai separately which was a good creative thinking and nice hearing.
Kambodhi had MMIs "tu tut too" and new Papanasam Sivan kriti...the list goes on.

grs,
.Wish we had met!
Yes, a touching concert, given my weakness for an all tamizh songs concert. Missed a Subramania Bharati song, though. The Suddhananda Bharati song is a favorite which made up for it.
UrilEn, kANi illai (minor correction, but UrilE kANi illai sounds somewhat prosaic--don't have a piece of land. URilEn deepens the meaning: neither have a place nor a piece of land to call my own!.

Arasi- It is truely a great miss.. This could have been double-delight.
I don't think you had come last year or year before last. I have been going to this venue for the past 3 years.
Last year Sanjay's TIS concert has been released by Charsur titled "chandiran oLiyil". Actually it was "Chandira oLiyil". But no problems.
It was also a wonderful performance.. what else you can say for sanjay ???
The verse goes like this..(I googled after your view). It conveys the meaning
as neither I have a land (in my place) nor relatives (in my place). Waiting for
your further inputs on this.
oorile kaani illai uravu martoruvar illai
paaril nin paadhamoolam patrinen...........................paramamoorthy

A triple delight if he'd begun with a varNam.Arasi- It is truely a great miss.. This could have been double-delight
A quadruple delight if he'd sung a Shyama Shastri Tamil composition.

If you change UrilEn to UrilE and paRRilEn to paRRinEn, meaning total changes and is inconsistent to what toNDarappoDiyAzhvAr is trying to convey! Please use google and find some authentic source for divyaprabhandam lyrics.
Please use this link http://www.prapatti.com/slokas/tamil/na ... maalai.pdf. I assume you know tamizh. Its pAsuram # 29. You can listen to this pAsuram sung by Smt MS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpnjtO-aJmo). For that matter, Smt MS ends the pAsuram as nagaruLLAnE instead of nagaruLAnE!

If you are talking about the simhEndramadyamam kRti, FYI, it was popularized by Smt MS. She had sung this first in her sEvAsadam movie (1938). She has sung this song at tamizh isai sangam in detail in the 60s as well as 70s. She used to do neraval at mayaLoDu iru puram irumAdar.....grsastrigal wrote: Kambodhi had MMIs "tu tut too" and new Papanasam Sivan kriti...the list goes on.

The leverage ratio on such small and subtle changes to the meaning is quite revealing.
When reading the 'will' vs 'would' thread elsewhere I was contemplating about how we will react to such things in tamil ( or other Indian languages ). I got the answer here. Not that I was looking for similar visceral reactions, but the way in which such word usage issues relating to Tamil are addressed here in a sophisticated manner is quite laudable. And more importantly quite educational.

Re: Sanjay at Tamizh Isai sangam-Raja Annamalai Hall 29.10.2
Thanks for the review.
A good coincidence was that I was listening to a 2001 Simhendramadhyamam recording of Sanjay, sung in a small hall in Bangalore. He must just have turned 30-31. The authority shows even at that time.
Western Notes- Was it in Tamil?
I have been listening to "Oorilen kaaNi illai" for ages. But never thought that it could be two parts "oor illen" and "kaani illai". Hats off to Arasi. Poetically a revelation. Was it the intention of the author?
Not sure.
BTW, how do you guys get access to Sanjay and other seniors concerts. When I visited Madras last year it was a total washout. Esp would lke to ask the "Disciple" of the MASTER ! He seems to have attended each one of Sanjay's concerts. We have to go thro' great efforts to get the few daily tickets which are on offer, esp @ MA, NGS, etc.,

kssr, this year there was no problem in getting tickets to Sanjay's concert at the YGP Auditorium on a walk-in basis. I think NGS, given its massive size, would not be a problem either. MA can be a problem, I agree. But then MA's strict time limit of 2.5 hours may not be the ideal venue.

KSSR, "Western Notes- Was it in Tamil?". Of course it was in tamil, "க ம க ரி க ப...."!!
Anyway, it was HMB's note popularized by MMI.

kssr meant it as a joke .English notes in a tamizh concert?, he quipped.
I was surprised too to hear Sanjay sing the MMI favorite at the end of the concert. I mean, haven't heard him sing it before.

I knew that kssr wrote in a humorous vein. What I mentioned also cannot be verified because (unlike many modern day vocalists) Sanjay does not bring "notes" with him!! Incidentally Sanjay sang the MMI favorite in one of his Bangalore concerts some years back.

I have a original version of GKB ktitis issued by somewhat in 40's. It is surutti. Actually, Gurucharan rendered this in surutti too in a concert last year.
I think the kriti goes ...Brindavanam... ullaththai "aLLiya"- not "koLLai konda".

On a slightly different note.... I just noticed that Arun Prakash has not accompanied Sanjay anywhere this season and over the past year or so. It could just be a coinicidence. Just wondering if anyone else, especially the die-hard Sanjay fans, noticed this trend ...

Mahavishnu,
I noticed this last year and asked Arunprakash about it and he said: vAsikkeREnE? I said I had missed hearing his accompanying Sanjay. He does accompany R&G quite a bit. I also see that he plays for TMK often whose blog announces his 2011 spring tour of the USA (and Canada too, I'm sure!)--and the accompanists are Sriramkumar and Arun Prakash.
I have also noticed over the years that Sanjay sings with many different accompanists and upa pakka vAdyams. His concerts are not a given ensemble affair.
In the past few years, I've heard him sing with Sam's brother, Patri, Ramdas, Murugabhupathi and Venkatesh too.

Arasi: that is reassuring. RKSK too used to play often for Sanjay and hasn't played much in the last few years. You are right that Sanjay rotates accompanists quite often, although Nagai and Varadarajan seem to be his favourite violinists. Guruvayoor Dorai is also a regular to add to your list.
Yes, TMK is touring all over N. America with RKSK/Arun Prakash. The tour wouldn't be complete without a Toronto stop sometime in April.

How did I forget Guru and Srimushnam! Yes, I even listened to Babu (GD's Sishya) this year. He is very good.
An aside: I did not stay but for the first half of the Rasikas meet. Wish we had more time to chat. I would have heard your recollections about your great aunt too.

Perhaps the next december season?
