9. thillAnA - kaRnATaka dhEvaghAndhAri(?) - Adhi.
10. karpagamE - MadhyamAvathi - Adhi.

A wonderful concert to remember for a long time to come. PP's voice was in great form and the concert was a virtual treat.

Most of them were swAthi thiRuNAL compositions and PP's masterful rendition of them embellished the concert to greater heights. The beauty of sarvalaghu swara singing (especially Arabhi) was brought out in its majestic best by PP, an hallmark of SSI's style of singing. Just goes to show, how sometimes all the fast cacophonical phrases and the mindboggling mathematics sometimes represents lack of ideas and ignorance in bringing out the depth and bhavam of a raga...

My grandma was also very happy to catch up with her childhood Trivandrum friend (PP).

A wonderful way to round of 2010.....

cheeky, harimau.

There are two sami Ninne varnams in Pantuvarali; only one of them is in adi talam (Shadkala Narasayya). The ata tala varnam is by Veenai Kuppayyer.

and Swati tirunal's itu sahasamulu is in Saindhavi. TMK also sang it at the academy on Jan 1.

The two varNams that start with the word 'sAmi' in this rAga I am familiar with are both in Adi tALa -- sAmi ninnE and sAminItODitEvE. I have seen multiple composers being ascribed to the second named varNam, in different books - of course, the first one viz sAmi ninnE is known as a composition of ShaDkAla narasayyA.

Come to think of it, the varNam in this concert was sAmi nITODi. PP sings some really uncommon varNams in general and I thoroughly enjoy them - a pada varNam in tODi in San Diego comes to mind immediately.

Sorry, I meant to say that there are two varnams that I am aware of in Pantuvarali. And yes, ksrimech the second one is the one you mentioned.

I have not heard sami niTODi before.

Harimau,
Where you at Chennai for the season? Wish you had come to the RasikAs meeting and had introduced yourself. There were a couple of forumites who mistook a gentleman I happen to know for Harimau at another concert of the Golden Girl!
