Injikudi Subramaniam @ Krishna Gana Sabha 16 jan

Post by Sivaramakrishnan »

Injikudi Subramanian -belonging to a graet paramapara of nagaswara vidwans- gave an excellent recital on 16 Jan 2011 as part of the Pongal nagaswara Isai vizha organised by SKGS. Perhaps his was the 'star event' of the series going by the sizable number of music lovers who had turned up for the recital.

injikudi pleasantly surprised the audience with Hamsakalyani (Hamsadhwani notes in arohana and kalyani in Avarohana - a creation of veteran Thanjavur sankara Iyer?) as the opening number.( I had listened to this raga sung by the veteran at Ragasudha hall a couple of years ago.) Injikudi rendered sparkling sawaraprastaara-s for the Pallavi, a tough task indeed for a tricky scale as this. This was followed by Manohari (paritaapamu-Tyagaraja). Naasikaabhooshani was detailed for Maaravairi ramani and the kriti was rendered with full fidelity to the Sahityabhaava.

Devamanohari found a brief appearance for kannatallinaapai

The main kriti was Neepadapankaja - that vinatge uruppadi in Begada. (This composition of Tyagaraja had been a masterpiece of Alathur brothers with its several 'must-be-sung sangathi-s' in the pallavi). The young maestro did full justice to the aalaapana with numerous prayoga-s reminding one of T N Rajarathnam Pillai. He succeeded quite well in dipping the pipe in Mandra shadja and traversing to the upper sthayi without any hitch. Thiruvalapauthur Kaliyamurthi led the tavil accompaniment and the tani he rendered with his companion was nice. Ramanathan provided nagaswaram support.

(I had to leave early at this point but was lucky to have Forum enthusiast CRama who was with me and later reported what followed.) injikudi rendered a scintillating 'madhuvanti' (kanda naal mudhal)before winding up the wonderful recital.

The plus points of Injikudi:
1. Perfect sruti alignment ( he uses a well audible electronic sruti box)
2. Choice of songs / ragas with some novelty (if I could compare the approach to TN Seshagopalan's)
3. Adherance to sahitya and command over kaalapramaana
4. Excellent range and admirable fingering technique (what they call 'Viraladi'?)
5. respect to tradition

I was thinking "What is this?" with hamsakalyANi and nAsikAbhUShaNi, but a main bEgaDa would have made it a good concert for me. :D Btw the dEvamanOhari krti is kanna taNDri nApai.

The madhuvanti he played was just awesome! It was difficult at many places to say whether we were hearing nadaswaram or shehnai. Certainly the pick of the (very good) concert for me.

Hamsakalyani is a creation of Sri Ashok Madhav from Pittsburgh. His 'Bhajamyaham satatam' is the only composition in this raga I think. The lyrics are here http://rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php? ... 8&p=179477

Dear Rasikas,

I have listened to Sri Injikudi E.M.Subramanyam for the first time during the Nadaswaram Festival held at Krishna Gana Sabha last year 2010 and instantly became a fan of him.

After a week I have listened to his Nadaswaram at P.S.High school.

At the KGS’ first concert he played the “Hamsa Kalyani “krithi “Ambha Sri Parameswari” Composed by SRI Thanjavoor Sankara Iyer.

At the P.S.High School concert last year, he played Keeravani as the main ragam. After the Thani Avarthanam by the Tavil Vidwans, Sri Injikudi Subramanyam played an enchanting Maduvanti raga alapana for about 15 minutes followed by the song “Kanda Nal Mudal”Composed by Sri Suddha Sadhvananda , popularized by Smt.Sudha Raghunathan. There was a standing ovation for this song last year.

At my personal request, Sri Injikudi Subramanyam played a detailed raga alapana for the Maduvanti ragam for about 20 minutes followed by the same krithi yesterday. Here again there was a standing ovation after the raga alapana and after completing the krithi. This raga exposition overshadowed the main raga Begada which was also played by him excellently.

Listening experience of the U/S dates back to nearly 5 decades.

Listening to the Nadswaram starting from P.S Veerasamy Pillai down to this day artists was always an enjoyment to me.

Even though I have enjoyed the Nadaswaram music from all the artists, I liked the Nadaswaram music played by Late Sri Vedaranyam Vedamurthy for his melody content.

Sri Injikudi E.M.Subramanyam’s Nadaswaram music is a top ranking music in to day’s scenario. In addition to his technical prowess, the nadam is very melodic. He has included many sancharams in the shenoy style without compromising the traditional carnatic sancharams.

He is doing his PHD for Nadaswaram playing under the able guidance of Sri B.M.Sundaram the musicologist.

After becoming an instant fan, I have given a lot of shenoy concert copies so that he can understand the grammars of Hindustani sancharams in Nadaswaram.

Somehow I have a good star in developing good friendship with many musicians including Sri Injikudi E.M.Subramanyam.

I have recorded yesterday’s concert. I requested him to give the permission for posting his concert in our website. He was kind enough to give me the permission to post his concert after mentioning that whatever I Play is for the lot of Rasikas to enjoy[ Sri G.S.Mani also will give permission for sharing the music to many Rasikas instantly].

Sri Rama, Sri Sivakrishnan, our fellow Rasikas, Sri Chandramouli of the Musiri family, Sri Thyagarajan , son of late Sri Palghat Mani Iyer and many others have attended the concert.

In another 3 or 4 days, I will be uploading his music in our website.

I believe the entire day had full of Nadhaswaram programmes and my relative was present the entire day as he is an ardent Nadhaswaram rasika . He mentioned the audience was tiny in the early hours but picked up gradually and had a decent crowd when this concert was on .

Nageswaran Sir. Thank you very much for the links.
