Is the tamil devotional song " Karpanai endralum Karchilai endralum" composed by Valee and sung by TMS is in Rag Hindolam or is it Malkauns? though both are similar and identical ragas. Please guide.

Re: What is the raga
For guidance on the characteristics of malkauns, I went to Parikkar's site.
http://www.sawf.org/newedit/edit09162002/musicarts.asp
There is good information here on the characteristics of the raganga Kauns. I am not able to connect the dots to see if those specific things are used here.
Then I saw this reference.

This rendering sounded like having some common elements with the song in question here.
I do not know if this let you decide one way or the other, but it is worth a listen in any case.

Mr. Raman, thanks for the link provided.
Vasanthakokilam, Thanks for your views. I regret for my late response in this forum.
The abhang sung by Pt.Bhimsen Joshi do have lot of common elements with that of the song "Karpanai endralum". May be due to the fact that the Rag Malkouns when rendered through a song, with a faster "kala pramana" it gives an effect to rag Hindolam while listening the song. Otherwise the raag Malkouns is heard normally rendered in HM in a slow tempo (chowkkam).
Pt. Bhimsen Joshi had sung anothert abhang in rag Malkouns which is sung in a slow tempo and has very few common elements of Hindolam in this song. The song is " savale sundara roopa manohara". The audio link of this Abhang sung in raag Malkouns is given below.

Please listen the following links for these two ragas sung in a jugal bandhi By

In the above links, the two ragas, Hindolam & Malkouns are sung in a jugal bandhi. Rag Hindolam's Hindusthani equivalent raag is "Malkouns" Though these two are considered as equivalant ragas, there are differences in the swara prayogas which give effect to this conclusion when we listen them. This impression is, may be,due to use of "kampita- prayoga" of the notes more in the rag Malkouns than in Hindolam. am I right?
