Re: Jeyaraaj-Jaysri at the Radel Veena Festival
Looking forward to the upload. From the review it seemed like the concert was a throwback to an earlier time -- we read about concerts by, for instance, mahAvaidyanAthaSivan which lasted four hours (even with an intermission in between for sandhyAvandanam!) with four or so large pieces punctuated by short kritis in between.Radhika-Rajnarayan wrote:The review and photo can be seen on this link:

This was something that caught my eye in the review
The Pallavi was a difficult `ati-chauka kaala pallavi’ in ‘arai-kaal eduppu.’
Could you say more about the tALam? I have never encountered an 'arai-kaal' eduppu -- was it 4-kalai?

Radhika - thank you for that review! Loved it. I have a question - did they play short tAnams at the end of all of their alApanas? (I know it was an elaborate rAgamAlika one for the RTP.) These short tAnams that many vaiNIkas play (I first noticed them in Smt. Kalpagam Swaminathan's presentations) are delectable - they add that extra bit for me that makes a vINa recital unique.

Yes, interesting eduppu indeed. if mukkAL ( three kAl ) is 3/4th, then arai-kAl would be half of 1/4th = 1/8th, right? Based on this I am guessing that a 2 kaLai tha-ka-dhi-mi tha-ka-ju-nu, the eduppu on the first ka would qualify as a araikAl eduppu. Or an eduppu on the first dhi on a 4-kaLai as Then Paanan says. Anyway, we will wait for R-R's response..

Vasanthakokilam, that's right.then arai-kAl would be half of 1/4th = 1/8th, right? Based on this I am guessing that a 2 kaLai tha-ka-dhi-mi tha-ka-ju-nu, the eduppu on the first ka would qualify as a araikAl eduppu.
rshankar: no, they did not - the tanam was only in the RTP. But each ragam was extremely elaborate, as you can guess, with only 11 items in a 4-and a half hour concert.did they play short tAnams at the end of all of their alApanas?

Of course, I understand. Take your time. Did not mean to pressure you. I was wondering if it fell between the cracks, that's all. This particular piece seems too precious to miss.Radhika-Rajnarayan wrote:Thenpaanan, just received some, after constant follow-up, and still not all of them - need to convert, split, upload --also have to juggle my office work and housework! beg your patience!

Re: Jeyaraaj-Jaysri at the Radel Veena Festival
just curious. Is this not supposed to be electronic veena? Why then the mic, no electronic pick-up?

Re: Jeyaraaj-Jaysri at the Radel Veena Festival
There is an electromagnetic pickup close to the bridge. This is connected to a built in amplispeaker housed in the kudam under the plucking hand. That is why they can either use a normal microphone / a lineout / no microphone(in chamber music concerts). We leave it to the artist to decide.
There is also a built in tambura inside the kudam on the lap

No wonder they are called 'sunAda vinOdini'! Radhika - a question for you: Who came up with that lovely, and totally appropriate name? And I wanted to add that I find your absoutely precise intro to the pieces you post brilliant...Radhika-Rajnarayan wrote:There is There is also a built in tambura inside the kudam on the lap

Re: Jeyaraaj-Jaysri at the Radel Veena Festival
Thank you, rshankar. Very kind of you.
The name Sunadavinodini was originally given to the first electric veena that Raj Narayan created in 1971, by Smt Sugandha Raman, his mother, a well-known vocalist and vainika herself.
As the electronic veena is an evolved version of that instrument, we continued with the name.

I had been busy with other things recently but I would be remiss if I did not thank you for posting these marvellous recordings. The sound itself is very pleasing to me, no doubt magical combination of great human expertise and great instruments. Some may cavil about the sound of the electronics being not the same as the sound of the acoustics but I would like to judge the instrument on its own terms. And on that basis it sounds very pleasing. And some divine playing by J&J too!
Thanks again
