Sangeetha Kalanidhi - for more than one person every year..
As there are many artists of standing , we may suggest to MA to increase the number suitably , at least for next few years so that back log can be cleared.

Re: Sangeetha Kalanidhi title - 2011
It may be time for repeating my annual unsought advice to the Music Academy. Since there are many deserving artists for the award, who are also advancing in age, and the MA may not be able to recognize all of them at the present rate , it is high time that one vocalist and one instrumentalist are recognized with "Sangeetha KalAnidhi: award EACH year. There are also several younger artists who are fast climbing the scale to deserve the award ! Age should not be a criterion. While the constitution of India has been amended umpteen times for trivial vested inetrests , why can't the MA amend its rules to acommodate more deserving musicians?! MA has in the past proved its maturity in this respect by awarding women artists ( MSS, DKP, et al.) and twin artists (Neela & KunjumaNi and in 2010 the Bombay sisters). Hence IT IS DOABLE and let us hope it happens.

Re: Sangeetha Kalanidhi title - 2011
Good idea Sundara Rajan.
They can also add a separate top level award for the laya category. The added advantage is it affords the possibility to have a grand and well publicized concert of all three top level award recipients (like the Nobel dinner)
More than anything, it will provide the correct and long overdue acknowledgment that laya is not an accompanying musical concept but an integrated and intertwined part of a single musical concept - consisting of melody and rhythm. It is so obvious to everyone including the decision makers but I guess they are afraid of change.

Re: Sangeetha Kalanidhi title - 2011
Sundara Rajan,
A very valid point. All that they have to do is to get another medal and a certificate (I am kidding).Seriously, they can honor deserving vidvAns and vidUshis double speed and avoid getting a backlog for ever. The rate at which younger artistes are coming up, the line of waiting for the honor is going to be longer in the coming years than the lines at the Academy for big draws. If two acceptance speeches are what they dread (okay, kidding again), they can tell them: no award if you exceed your speech even by a minute (a la curtain time)
More comments on the Academy, now that we are commenting, any way:
Positive ones: A roomier lobby--with the ticket counter corner cleared--is much less of a fairground now. What's more, the outside counter has awnings and chairs for those who wait and form lines from dawn and wait for the counter to open. They were very civil too (a pleasant change), regretted being sold out when I arrived there a tad late. The offered the alternative of viewing the concert on the screen in the mini hall. What's more, I was told that they even served coffee while folks waited! A new improved, rasikA-friendly Academy!
Thanks
Something they can avoid (?): it was getting to be a distracting (and distressing for those concerned--the ones on the stage in particular) repeat of a scene when a stray relative or friend of the performer unknowingly (??) went and sat in the first row. A volunteer would come running (lowering herself so as not to obstruct the view), whisper to the seated ones that it was a reserved row for SKs and the Academy officials and then ask them to move to other rows.
This repeated scene can be avoided by specifying in the Academy's letter to the performers that they specifically inform their kith and kin about the reserved first row. Just a thought...
As for the canteen, it was better, perhaps the meals were too, but tiffin and mini meals were nothing to rave about. A great improvement no doubt--from the old, soggy floored tented affair where the food was delicious!

Sangeetha Kalanidhi - for more than one person every year..
Considering the number of highly deserving persons in the field of Carnatic Music, it is perhaps time for the Music Academy, Chennai, to consider giving the annual award of “Sangeetha Kalanidhi” to more than one artist in the same year. Otherwise it is possible that quite a number of eligible persons may miss the award once and for all. There are a number of contemporaries like – Sudha Raghunathan, Ravi Kiran, Mandolin Srinivas, Bombay Jayashri, Sanjay Subramanian, Ganesh-Kumaresh, TM Krishna, Unni Krishnan, Sowmya and many others apart from their seniors like OST, VVS, Hyderabad Brothers, TR Subramanian, Trichur Ramachandran, Charumathi Ramachandran, Suguna Varadachari etc and the many instrumentalists, and the many eminent artists of our neighbouring states - Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. They all deserve the award of Sangeetha Kalanidhi and many of them may not receive the honour, if the Music Academy follows the current practice of honouring just one artist with the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award.

vkailasam, yes, I recall those discussions but they are part of the annual 'let us predict who the SK is' threads. I do not want to merge this with those threads. This is one issue that keeps coming up, so let us use this thread for that.

Please read posts 23,24 & 25 under the previous discussion on the topic "Sangeetha Kalanidhi 2011". There is no point in repeating the same suggestions in different locations of the forum. What was said for 2011 applies for years to come as well. We might as well at least quote the relevant post here, if not merge .

The posts related to the current state of CM teaching have been moved to : http://www.rasikas.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15698
Venkatakailasam, Sundara Rajan, As per your request, three posts from the other thread have been pulled and merged with this thread.
A bit of adminstrivia.. It is an error prone process with the forum software, so I was treading carefully. But more importantly, there are issues with such merges. Those posts are from before the first post of this thread and so they appear first. Regrets to the starter of this thread Shyamala Rangarajan that her post is now pushed down and lost the 'original poster' status. But the significant issue is, the conversation flow is messed up.. the flow suggests that Shyamala Rangarajan did not read the few posts in this topic before posting
. But given the benefits of keeping these types of posts in one place, I went ahead and did the merge.

Vasanthakokilam...Thank you for the reorganisation. Yes .. indeed I missed the earlier posts on the same subject. It does not matter that mine is not taken as the starter; what is important is generation and expression of new thoughts on this subject by different members and the feedback given in this column could lead to the MA reviewing their policy with regard to the award of Sangeetha Kalanidhi in the future years. We all know how the MA have in the past missed honoring some very eminent persons (eg Lalgudi Shri Jayaraman, Late Shri S. Rajam...). Change in approach by the MA could perhaps lead to avoidance of such anomalies and recognizing the contribution of the many stalwarts in this field in future.

By increasing the numbers the award might just end up like Kalaimamani. What if some deserving persons do not get it at all. It does not make a difference to their greatness or achievements.
