Yesterday Saketaraman's concert was good, Kambodi main, also sang Kumudakriya, Bahudari, Brief Hindolam etc.
Heard people heaping plaudits re:Gayathri Venkatraghavan's concert ....

Vid Sowmya's concert was absolutely AWESOME; great khamas, lovely mukhari; an unbelievable Poorvikalyani - it's ages since I've heard such a *stunning* Poorvikalyani; We were lucky to have heard a nice RTP; She sang for 3 hours 10 mins.
Charulatha Ramanujam on the violin; H S Sudhindra on the mrudangam.

Her concert was worth listening to if only for the Mukhari alone. That is the first time I fully appreciated the utter bhaavam of Mukhari. Really transported me to another plane altogether. The Purvikalyani was excellent too. But Sowmya and Charulatha ma'am both missing the taalam and eduppu in the pallavi was surprising. But since it was composed on the spot, I can kind of understand it. Overall, had an extremely enjoyable evening.

squims,

You would like mukhAri since you like shuhbapantuvarALi SO much. They are somewhat similar in bhAvam, but shubhapantuvarALi is in a way "rawer" than mukhAri. :)

Hehe that is true indeed! I just have something for these gloomy raagams! I enjoy them way more than the happy ones.

I agree with Squims, "some punch" was missing during the whole concert barring the alapanas of Mukhari/Sahana and to some extent Purvikalyani :( .

Also would have liked to hear at-least one "Lord Shiva" song, this concert being part of Shivarathri series and after hearing
to TNS's awesome concert which was based fully on "Lord Shiva" theme.

Don't know if she had sung before, because when i entered she was just finishing khamas krithi.

Regret not attending, given his accompanists. :( Forgot about it, and felt tired too.

Looks like TMK was at the stadium too :). Well ... was at neither place due to geographic compulsions... know the result of one thing... curious to know the result of the other!

Going by the attendence from among rasikas, seems like it didn't have a very good draw after all. :P

Pity, since the accompanists are my favourites. :(

I did not attend. However, what we all have missed was a unique combination of Sahana alapana followed by a Mayamalavagowla kriti . I didn't dare ask whether this had kalpanaswara in dhanyasi... I wonder how this will be presented in our songlist..

@ braindrain

Me too just received the news from one of my friends who attended the concert that TMK gave an alapana of Sahana and followed up with the kriti in mayamalavagaula - Sree nathadhi guruguho jayathi. Bizarre..

Would love to know the audience reaction then, if someone who had attended the concert live, pls post

It seems that he also announced that there is no connection between the sahana alap and the mayamalavagaula kriti ( for those who wondered whether dikshitar originally composed the kriti in sahana.. lol ) and continued the concert as if it was quite normal to render a raga and deliver a kriti in some other.

I had attended the concert where TMK sang viriboni varnam as main ( the MA concert) and also another concert where he elaborated begada and sang Inthachala varnam ( as the 4th piece in a concert).

I might agree with Viriboni just because it is a fascinating composition which has that much of bhairavi in it to be explored.

But just cannot digest this one haha . Some may call it the height of innovation. Wonder what to expect next!!

Hi i've been a sincere follower of all your reviews, but now, i could'nt control my urge to become a member, to post a reply on this RAGE ON STAGE by TMK in past few concerts.

On a positive note, it is quite releiving to note that efforts are being taken by TMK to break the cliche , and when we talk about innovation , is it possible to draw lines?? although it was a releif that TMK did'nt pitch any athitharasthayi notes in the concert

Was that addressed to me by any chance? :P

The songlist itself looks a bit weird to me. But I'd have loved to listen to the opening swarajathi. Did he sing it with neraval and kalpana swarams? I've listened to Semmangudi sing the same swarajathi like that.

To give benefit of doubt, may be his mind also was in the stadium when he finished Sahana Alapana and started MMG krithi :D

TMK sang nerval and swaras for the bhiaravi swarajathi at usual "Shyamakrishna Sodari"

Harikamboji Kriti was Thyagaraja swami's Enduku nirdaya with super-fast swaras

I think Kamboji krithi didn't have "Ayiram" it had "Koti"

Kana Kan Koti Vendum -Papanasam Sivan, with a descent Alapana and Nerval @ Pallavi line and no swaras
This was followed by Thani avarthanam which was also OK

Virutham (sorry don't remember the lines) had Anandabhairavi,Desh,Bhageshree(? not sure),Sindhubhairavi and Behag I suppose

R.K Shriramkumar i thought was very good that day.
