Sanjay Subrahmanyam at Rathnagireeswarar temple on 25.2.2011

Sanjay Subrahmanyam vocal
Varadarajan violin
Neyveli Venkatesh Mrudangam
Alathur Raj Ganesh kanjira

Sariyo Nee Seyyum Begada adi varnam ? S
janakajasametha N Asaveri rupakam Tyagaraja
Kuvalayadala Nattakkurinji adi Tyagaraja R
Chintayamam Bhairavi rupakam MD R N S
kanakkan Ayiram Neelambari adi Anaiyya
Karunalayanidhiye Hindolam adi Vedanayakam Pillai
Ekamranadam Poorvikalyani adi MD RS

Another memorable concert from Sanjay in the shivaratri festival at Ratnagereeswarar Temple.I have been listening to Sanjay in the temple for the past 5 or 6 years and each one is a gem.His Nattakkurinji, kalyani kambodhi and last years kumudakriya and shanmukapriya were all such a treat to the ears.Thogh it was a temple concert the crowd was quiet except for the karagosham in between. He was in full form as usual. The bhairavi and poorvikalyani spoke for his vidhwath. As mr.Narasimhan said in his speech the bhairavi raga devatai was dancing.
earlier he gave a neat sketch of Nattakkurinji. His kalpana swarams in mangalakara first kalam and second kalam at uthunga, kamaneeya and vrushturangam in the bhairavi kriti were wonderful.Varadarajan was eqully good and the combination of these three accompaniments was very good.

The tani by Venkatesh and Raj Ganesh was excellent.Raj Ganesh is the grandson of alathur Subbhaiyar we were told.
After the poorvi kalyani Sanjay sang a Muthaiya Bhagavatar kriti in kapi which i have never heard.words were not clear. After that he sang an item in Bhagesree which i heard from outside and not sure what it was.finally he sang a virutham and a Bharathiar song i was told.
On the whole it was a very satisfying concert.

Thanks, Malavi. The Ratnagiriswarar temple provides a very nice ambience for a Carnatic concert. Sitting on the floor right next to Nandi gives a great view of the stage. In previous years, Sanjay has performed concerts with kritis exclusively on Siva. The Besant Nagar audience is typically quite well behaved and restrained.

The Begada varnam "sariyO nI seiyyum tAmadam" is by Tiger Varadachariar.

Last year I had a chance to hear three concerts vijaysiva ,suryaprakash and sanjay, each were gems. Hope you attend more and cover more concerts.

mahavishnu,
Agree that besantnagar audience is well behaved- less boisterous than mylapore .For sure I know during last year's vijaysiva concert I met some one who is well behaved. Was that you??? :tmi:

bEgaDa always pleases and this varNam by Tiger is appealing. Tamizh varNams are refreshing to hear because they are not sung that often.

Rajesh,
Have not heard a single concert in this temple but from what I gather from the reviews, the musicians give an inspired performance here (audience response?).Yes, more reviews from this venue are welcome.

Rajesh. It was nice to meet you after Vijay Siva last year at the same venue. The JampupathE he sang was simply wonderful.
Are you back from your travels?

I have very fond memories of this temple for another reason. My late father-in-law, a long time resident of Besant Nagar, and I attended Sanjay's sivaratri concert here two years ago. Sitting by the Nandi was his favourite spot. It was a brilliant kutcheri that day with Edaiya gati (chalanata), Adum Deivam (kamboji) and a very soulful Sabapathikku (Abhogi). Vividly energized by the concert, we spoke quite extensively about Koteeswara Iyer and the resurgence of vivadhi ragams in Sanjay's concerts on the short walk back home from the Ratnagiriswarar temple. My father-in-law passed away quite suddenly a few days after that. That was the last concert that we attended together.

mahavishnu,

I was at this concert you have mentioned (2 years back). Superb Kamboji alapana and Varadharajan's return was also very good. i was expecting a big krithi - Koniyadina Naapai (Kamboji) on Lord Kalahasteeswara after such a grand alapana. Anyway, I was traveling out of town and I left at that point. Sanjay had sung Koniyadina @ Meccademy a few years back.

Here is a clip from the concert reviewed in this thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWdQGETkYn0 posted by Sanjay himself.
Sanjay also has a new blog post this week, for those of you that follow that kind of thing.

Thanks for the youtube link. Some additions to the song list

The song in Kapi was Kalilo by HMB and Bageshri was Gopala of Swati Tirunal. Both of them are available on the youtube clip. Can anyone tell me something more of the Kapi song? Who has sung it etc.
