Re: Upcoming veena concert in Houston
:tmi: What a beautiful veena concert on Friday, March 25th, 2011 at the Ganesh temple (inside Sri Meenakshi Temple), Houston, by Mrs. Nirmala Rajasekar! As a true disciple of veena vidhushi Smt. Kalpakam Swaminathan, she brought out the vocal nuances of carnatic music so effectively on the veena. She was ably accompanied by Mahesh Iyer on the violin and Maayavaram Siva on the mridangam. It was clear the audience thoroughly enjoyed the concert as evidenced by the abundance of applauses throughout the concert.
The opening varnam in my favorite ragam Sahana was very crisp, followed by Gam Ganapathe in Hamsadhwani. Then came the lovely surprise Evvaritho in Manavathy. This was followed by the beautiful rendition of Papanasam Sivan's Kaana Vendamo in Sri Ranjani. Next were 2 songs on Goddess Meenakshi, very apt choices for the venue, Maamava Meenakshi in Varali and Devi Neeye Thunai in Keeravani, with the brisk Sarasa Samadhana in Kaapi Narayani sandwiched between the Meenakshi krithis. Devi Neeye Thunai as the main piece was rendered elaborately with ragam, thanam and 2 neravals in Shaame Shankari and Alaimagal Kalaimagal which evoked poignant emotions in the hearts of all the meenakshi devotees. The concluding pieces included the crisp Purandaradasa krithi in Nada Namakriya - Dasanamaadiko enna Rama, the haunting Alai paayudhe in Kaanada and the brisk thillana in Paras.
The artist displayed her mastery of the veena so effortlessly. In addition to effectively executing the vocal nuances on the strings, she also produced the aspects unique to veena playing, including certain gamakas, fingering techniques, performing on 2 strings simultaneously, and traversed all octaves at several instances during the concert. It was indeed a visual treat to see how she enjoyed the music as she performed on the veena. The amazing nadham emanating from her veena when she played on the 3rd string made the audience spell bound! The weaving of her concert with intermittent vocal phrases proved her excellence as a singer as well. Needless to say, at the end the artists received standing ovation, and it was clear during the post-concert interaction that the audience was enthralled by the concert, kindling the desire to learn / re-learn veena in quite a few hearts!
