Manda Sudharani at Music Academy Dec 2010

Post by Sabaash »

Just felt i should share some thoughts about this memorable concert with my friends/members/rasikas at this forum. Hope the fact that the concert was held 2 months back do not matter much to any one of us

Venue : The Madras Music Academy
December Music Season 2010
On 16/12/2010 7:00 pm to 9 30 pm

Smt Manda Sudharani - Vocal
Smt Padma Shankar - Violin
Sri Neyveli Narayanan - Mridangam
Sri Nanganallur Swaminatha - Ghatom

Vanajasana Vinutha - Sreeragam - Rupakam
Ninnadane - Kannada - Adi (r s)
Ithi samayamu - Natakapriya - Rupakam (r s)
Rema ramana - Vasanthabhairavi - Adi
Mohanarama - Mohanam - Adi (r n s t)
RTP - Poorvikalyani - Mishra Chappu -- Apoorva kalyani | Apaara karunaatharangini

Radha krishna radha - Chenchurutti - Adi
Thillana - Anandabhairavi - Adi Thisra nada

To start with i must say i actually never meant to listen to this concert. This concert was held after Kanyakumari mam's solo at Music Academy. The name Manda Sudharani (unfortunately) is not that familiar in our places. So went into this one without knowing what to expect. But it eventually turned out to be one of the best out of the 50 odd concerts i heard this season.

Vanajasana vinutha is nothing but the beauty of simplicity. Being a fan of Subbaraya Sastri kritis i couldnt help but lap it up with both my hands.

A vibrant kannada proved perfect foil to a subtle sriragam. (i believe the success of a concert depends largely on such intelligent selections). should say that the kriti was taken to whole new level by Sri Neyveli Narayanan. A small koraippu shifting atlernatively between 'ma' and 'ga' was lively ( one ending with 'sgm,,m,, and the alternate one nsg,,g,,)

The swarams to Ithi samayamu were rendered at the charanam , i think at 'Karuna joodu'
The swara bedham done by her at madhyamam ( charukesi ) was a delight.
Then she did the unthinkable (atleast to me) by alternating between natakapriya at the original shadjam and charukesi at madhyamam. Was just "jaw dropping'' to say the least.

The pallavi was elaborate. It is always nice to hear an RTP as the main piece. A challenge for the Mridangist too. Shri Narayanan was easily upto it.

,,,,,,,,,,,,a,poor,,,va,kal,,,ya,,,ni,,,,,,,,,,a,pa,,,,,ra,ka,ru,na,,,,,tha,ran,,,gi,ni,

The only disappointing aspect of the concert was the audience. Hardly 50 people were present.
Hopefully i can listen to a lot more of this artist in future.
I can see that some of members in rasikas are from Hyderabad. I woudl be glad if anyone can provide more info about this wonderful artist.

Yes I have heard her in a sabha attached to Nanganallur Anjaneyar koil. Iirc that had the same pallavi (or at least another pallavi in pUrvI kalyANi/cApu). ADa mODi galadE was a submain. The varNam's pUrvAngam that day had an interesting mixture-of-speeds rendition too.

Hyderabad sabhas tend to call people who are already celebrities in Madras -- and Smt Sudha Rani resides in Vijayawada, it seems. :)

Sabaash, I haven't heard a bhEdam done during swaras. Was the sa of cArukEsi (ma of the shruti equipment) sung as sa or as ma? Singing it as ma would be several times tougher.

Sabaash, thanks for that review.

Manda Sudharani is no stranger to rasikas.org. Shri Kulkarni (and others) organised a concert of hers for rasikas.org circa 2007 at the MatScience institute. I even have a copy of the recording from that concert that was made available for download. Here is a review of that concert from the Hindu http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/fr/2 ... 390700.htm The Easamanohari she sang that day was really quite delightful.

There might even be a thread about her in the Vidwans/Vidushis section.

She is a very talented singer; pity that there was not a larger crowd at MMA during the december season. Neyveli Narayanan is a wonderful accompanist. I'm sure he would have taken the concert to a different plane!
