Lji and rshankar,

My teacher and Sowmya's version have the following differences:

Pallavi :
kANum instead of kANOm
palanE instead of palanEn

A.P.:
maNALarE instead of maNALanE
vaikunda instaed of paikoNDa
kuLLasoranAda (or maybe kuLLasoranAtha)- instead of kuLLattOr orAnAga

Charanam:
paDaivETTukAmO instead of paDaivETTutAmO
mAttuLLa tangam instead of maduLLattam nam
pittaLai sariyAmO instead of pittanaittariyAmO

I have learnt "mana maNam" as "manO manO" but Sowmya sings it as "mana maNam"

Pl check if any of these help you translate!

Gokul: The words you have posted make more sense than the ones in my post. I wrote down the lyrics by listening to Subhashini Parthasarathi's rendition.

@ Ravi Sir:

I just noticed one more difference:

In the anupallavi, we sing it as:

vanam sei mA mAlar magaL....

Pl take your time! Sowmya's rendition is available on sangeethapriya.

Gokul - here is my attempt. I have used PB's input, your corrections, and what I was able to hear to 'correct' the lyrics posted by Lji, and this is how I see the context of this padam unfolding:
This padam falls in the same category of 'aduvum SolluvAl', 'gEliyAi pOnadaDi', etc., where muruga is berated by the nAyikA (along the lines of 'vazhi mAri vandIrO?) for taking up with another woman the nayika considers unworthy. She sees herself as a superior person worthy of being muruga's consort and wonders why the 'lowliness' of the 'other woman' has not occurred to him, and also bemoans the fact that he gets offended and becomes defensive when this very obvious truth is pointed out to him.

pallavi
tanakku tAnE tONavENum allAl oruvar tAn Solli palan En kANOm

This thought should occur (tOnavENum) to oneself (tanakku tAnE), but if not (allAl), why (En) is it that one cannot appreciate/see (kANOm) the consequences (palan), especially if another (oruvar tAn) were to point (Solli) it out?

anupallavi
vanam Sei mAmalar magaL vaLLi maNALanE vaikunta vA kaLLa kuLLattOrAnAga

Oh husband (maNAlanE) of vaLLi, the forest (vanam)-born daughter (SEi) of mahA (mA) lakshmi (malarmagaL) [1], come (vA) when dawn breaks (vaikunta) like the theiving (kaLLa) adulterer (kuLLatOrAnAga) you are.

caraNam
kUttADi silambu paDaivITTukAmO kUvum kuyilum kAgamum iNaiyAmO
mAtuLLa tangam pittaLai sariyAmO manam manam sAkSi allavO rAma rAmA

Will the anklet (Silambu) of a wanton dancer (kUttADi) be of use (AmO) to an encampment (paDaivIDu) [2]? Will a cooing/singing (kUvum) cuckoo (kuyilum) and a crow (kAgamum) ever be equal (iNaiyAmO)? Along those lines, can gold (tangam) of the finest quality (mAtuLLa/mAduLLa) be equated (SariyAmO) with copper (paTTaLai)? Isn't (allavO) one's mind/heart (manam) witness (sAkshi) to these things for oneself (manam)? OMG (rAma rAmA) [3]!

FOOTNOTES
[1] vaLLi is the daughter born to lakshmi in the form of a deer – hence called rohishajA as well….I am not sure if this very contrived attempt to explain the first few words is correct - if someone is able to supply the cortempt to rect words to this line, the meaning of the anupallavi will become clearer
[2] paDaivIDu can also refer to the 6 temples/homes of muruga
paDaiveTTu would mean something like a wound – not sure how it would fit here….since he is a brave warrior, I think, the nAyika is berating muruga for taking up with a dancing girl whose anklets do not bring honor to his encampment/house
[3]
