tani?
?
It was a good concert. I liked BUG's bhairavi AlApanai and sAranga swaras. Gayathri's neraval for the upacAramulanu was interesting in many places, especially the "normal" neraval. I liked the punch (to which the percussion department contributed immensely) packed invararAgalaya's rendition too.
It was getting late for me and I left before the tani began.
The Grounds are too vast and offer no intimacy whatsoever. I might have thought I've been spoiled by two concerts at Ananya and one at Sanjay Nagar Ganapati temple, but Vani School grounds were also better. Gayathri seemed flourishier than I remember (I don't remember much, since I saw her I think in Nov 2009). It took some charm away from upacAramulanu's rendition.

I just read that as 'bug's'.I liked BUG's bhairavi AlApanai and sAranga swaras

OK I'm curious as to what that means. As in, she sang it without any gimmicks, random speed changes etc.?Gayathri's neraval for the upacAramulanu was interesting in many places, especially the "normal" neraval.

Squims, neraval can be split to normal neraval (there must be a name for it which I don't know), samakAla neraval and fast neraval (is it called madhyamakAla neraval?).

Ohh ok. So that's in the lowest speed? Sung mostly without even the gamakams and stuff?

Squims,
Let's take praNava svarUpa vakratuNDam of vAtApi gaNapatim.
sa sa - sn pa - ,,pa - niga - pari - ,,ga - rsni - sa,,
would be an approximate notation for it. "sa", "ga", "ni" run for two mAtras (?) -- call them dIrgha swaras. s, n, etc run for one mAtra -- call them hrsva swaras.
Normal neraval has dIrgha as well as hrsva swaras (sometimes even faster swaras), and roughly follows the outline of the composition itself.
samakAla neraval has only dIrgha svaras, and is very rarely heard these days -- when it is heard, it is just one Avartana or so.
Fast neraval has mostly hrsva swaras (even dIrgha svaras in it can be "sensed" as composed of hrsva swaras).
A "normal" neraval on the line:
A samakAla neraval:
A "fast" neraval:
