Sunday (06.02.2011) morning saw probably a one of its kind programme ever arranged in recent times, courtesy two of our senior fellow rasikas (VKV and SN). The session with TS came off beautifully and it was to become a morning to be remembered for a long time to come. Again a round of applause to VKV and SN for their zeal in making this happen
Am trying to recollect from memory the exact sequence of events in those 3.5 hours, so kindly excuse for any mismatch of sequence/ elimination of small happenings here and there.
The morning started off with VKV welcoming the gathering and also by giving a gist as to what can be expected from this programme. A multimedia presentation was played following this, which begins with a lovely misra chApu thani, capturing some of the brilliant moments from TS' illustrious career, including some of his old concert pics, concert pics with PSP, teaching activities in the west, his being conferred the "Doctorate of Music" by the "University of British Columbia" , World music ensembles, etc.. etc..
Then TS was requested to talk by VKV about his early life, gurukulam & Joint concerts with PSP, career building... TS gave a very good account of that starting by mentioning his initial tutelage under his cousin Sri.Poovalur Venkatraman and subsequently his tutelage under PSP for 7 years. He mentions about him being the alarm clock for the entite area in Trichy when he begins his practise at 4 in the morning. He recalls how PSP was so happy to listen to him play as a 7 year old kid and immediately wanted to take him under his wings. Experiences under PSP and TS' double mrudangam concerts with PSP came to the fore one by one.. Here a Laya vinyAsa recording with PSP and TS thani in misra jhampa thAlam was played...
Cleveland Sundaram was then invited to talk. VVS gave a very good speech recalling his association with TS from 1971... He recalled some of TS' memorable concerts in the US with various artists like John Higgins, Trichur Ramachandran, KVN, LGJ-Ramani, Flute Mali etc, describing how TS' playing elevated those concerts to unseen heights.
SN then presented a Citation to TS on behalf of our forum..
TS then started off recalling his association with the yesteryear stalwarts, especially SSI and how that SSI was very fond of him.. He recalls the first time he plyed for SSI was in the wedding of Radha-Jayalakshmi in 1957 at the Kalki Gardens.. SSI sang that day with Rajamanickam Pillai on the violin, PSP and TS on the mrudangams.. (An incident which MKR has shared with us few times in this forum before)... TS recalls how he was touched by an incident showing SSI's fondness for him. When he asked MSS about SSI when she was touring the US in 1975, She is said to have remarked to TS "Semmangudi Mama misses you"... V.Subramaniam (one of SSI's prominent sishyAs) joined in the discussion, recalling the SSi-TS combo concerts... Especially he recalls a concert at R.R.Sabha in 1969 (Which is giving goosebumps to me and Uday

Also the question of the difference between the "ThanjAvur and the PudukkOtai" schools of playing crept up, which TS explained by demonstrating too.. He played and showed some of the subtle differences between the two scchools on the fingering techniques and others. Mannargudi A.Easwaran (Hence MAE) joined the discussion exhibiting his admiration for TS. MAE egged on TS to play some of the trademark TS stuff in thisram. TS says he used to have a wish that when people give song requests to the main artists for singing their favourites, he used to long for something like that for the mrudangam artists too, and that he was happy that it is getting fulfilled today...
By this time it was already past 1 and we saw concluding speeches from a TS' disciple from Canada and VKV summing up the entire programme beautifully..
All in all, a memorable Sunday morning..
