This list explains why I got a message from a cousin late in the evening asking me for details about Varamu. Hehe.
Sounds like a really good concert. From the looks of it, the sisters seem to have chosen the raagas very well (wasn't too happy with the selection the past two times in B'lore). Waiting for a full report g_g! :)

Vid.s Ranjani and Gayathri (RG) gave an excellent concert - a memorable one at the Rama Seva Mandali on Sunday. There was a triple header in Bangalore - Neela @ Koramangala, Malladi @ Seshadripuam and RG at RSM. Well my 7 year old wanted to attend RG and wanted to stay for the "full" concert (she was awake till 9) and she decided for me! I had my apprehensions that they will be a rain of requests - and I would come back disappointed.

Well, I was wrong! They started w/ the Kaanada varnam. They mentioned that there was a request to sing a song in poornachandrika it being a full moon day - actually it was the next day (karaga day) - they sang sri raja rajeswari of Dikshitar. Then R gave a nice alapana of Lathangi followed by Marivere. Throughout the concert, BUG gave excellent accompaniment. I have become a fan of BUG - his bowing is really nice and he blends with the main artiste very well. Neraval was at Dharalona Nee Sati. Next to follow was Ik(g)o namma swami in manirangu. I was waiting for a rain of short popular numbers - but RG started on a wonderful begada. Lokavana chatura brought back memories of SSI rendering the krithi at the same venue many years back. No neraval in the main - gave me hopes of an RTP (well I thought so too at another concert only to be disappointed). After a short Mara vairi ramani - RG sang an RTP in varamu. The varamu treatment was more hindusthani-ish IMO than a brief one I recently heard (well i didn't know about it a month back) - very nicely rendered. The had composed the pallavi on the way to the concert and sang ragamalika swarams in Bilahari, Ranjani, Valaji and Hamsanandi. Very nice RTP and after that was the long... speech. Someone needs to send a message to the person to keep it really short. The rest was a dasara padam mira bhajan and the omnipresent abhang. I had *no* complaints after being treated to an elaborate lathangi, begada and varamu.

I left a happy person - I am sure that they had chits and requests raining on them and they chose to keep it a balanced and traditional concert. That should be a real challenge to them. They seem to really enjoy their singing - and kudos to them for a well executed concert. BUG was very very good - and percussionists gave able support.
