Thani was good.

Concert Report: Disclaimer - This is only a report - am not qualified to do a "review"
rm - the first song had swarams and a sketch of kamalamanohari
I was amongst the lucky ones to have had the privilege of attending a superb concert by Vidushi Veenai Jayanthi Kumaresh (VJ). The past few days we are having a downpour in Bangalore - and all the "pandal" concerts were hit. This was my first visit to the Indiranagar Sangeetha Sabha's Purandara Bhavan. The auditorium is small and nice. It provides a nice feeling to listen in a chamber like atmosphere. As I entered I saw a bunch of kids practice "Ra Ra Venugopala" loudly.... I salute the organization for fostering this timeless art in Indiranagar - and also hosting this concert. Vainikas and Veena concerts have become a rarity these days.
VJ started with a sketch of kamalamanohari followed by Dikshitar's Kanjadalayathakshi. This had a nice round of swarams. This was followed by an abhogi sketch and the popular Gopala Krishna Bharathi's sabapathikku with another round of swarams. Tyagaraja's atukuradini was rendered sensitively. I had requested a detailed Natakuanji or Saveri through email - and was mightily thrilled when she started on the natakuranji alapana. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it was followed by Syama Sastri's Mayamma a rare composition. One of her young students, Uttara sang as she played the song. Due to pitch differences, the veena was not heard very clearly. I hope the young Uttara is also learning the veena - she sang it very well and was confident. A short alapana for Poorvi Kalyani followed and Neelakanta Sivan's Ananda Natanam Aduvar Tillai with an excellent round of swarams with percussion responding. Very nice choice of songs - mayamma and ananda natanam following each other. It started pouring outside and we could hear it very clearly unfortunately. VJ has an excellent sense of humor - and she announced that she was going to play amritavarshini
and as an afterthought she decided to play Nannu Kannadalli. A magnificent alapana of Kapi and tanam (how can we have veena concerts w/o tanam) made it an evening to remember. Tyagaraja's Inthasowkhyamani was rendered very nicely with a round of swarams in Kedaragowla, Subhapantuvarali, Neelambari and Ranjani followed by Tani.
Post tani - Sadashiva brahmendra's manasa sancharare, Ganesh-Kumaresh's Ragapravaham in Behag, LGJ's tillana in Sivaranjini and the traditional composition of Radhasametha krishna followed. Upon audience's request she played Tamboori Meetidava in Sindu bhairavi as the venue was Purandara Bhavana and ending with mangalam in Saurashtra/Madhyamavati.
This is a concert to remember - and made my trip from Jayanagar to Indiranagar a worthwhile one though I was terrified of the rain. Her gamakams were awesome - and the concert planning and presentation exquisite. There was nice balance of composers and ragams. I only wish she plays more often in Bangalore. I thank her very much for playing my request of Natakuranji. She makes playing look so easy and as a student of Veena I know that it is not
It was an evening to remember and one of the best concerts of the season. Only wish it was longer
