TVS/Mahadevan - TKV - B Harikumar - N Amruth
T V Sankaranarayanan - Vocal
Mahadevan - Vocal support
TKV Ramanujacharyulu - Violin
B Harikumar - Mridangam
N Amruth - Khanjari
gajAnanam (shlOkam) - haMsadhwani
shrI raghukula - haMsadhwani - Adi - T (S @ pallavi)
sakala graha bala nInE - aThANa - khaNDacApu - PD
shrI satya nArAyaNam - shubhapantuvarALi - tishraEka-2 - MD (R, S @ pallavi)
sarasa sAma dAna - kApi nArAyaNi - Adi - T (NS @ hitavu mATalentO bAga palkitivi)
tODi
TVS's open-throated music was so good to listen to after such a long time! Music came out with such force from him that it couldn't but make an impact on any listener!
haMsadhwani and aThANa made for such a "viruviruppu"-filled beginning! The swarams in haMsadhvani were classic TVS material, and TKV gave very apt replies. I couldn't fail to notice that Mahadevan sounds like NSG for some reason.
The shubhapantuvarALi krti was sung neatly and the swarams were good too. However, the AlApanai wasn't the kind I would like for shubhapantuvarALi. I feel shubhapantuvarALi is best with a loud shruti, and a leisurely, note-by-note exploration.
The kApi nArAyaNi was absolutely thrilling. It came with a very distinctive colour, in full weight, as a rAgam that can hold its own, etc.
I must mention the MMI-inherited (?) nmggrrssnnddppmm-type phrases which were used in the anupallavi! I saw a similar sangati used in sEvikka vENDumaiya by Amrutha last week at the Naadasurabhi concert.
I left after the kApi nArAyaNi, partly fearing it might be late if I waited for the next (main) piece to conclude, partly because I wanted to go back with the KN. The tODi AlApanai was being done by Sri Mahadevan.

Remaining songs:
6. Enduku Daya Radura - Thodi - T (RS) (Ragam by his son)
7. Sarasamukhi - GowdaMalhar - HMB
8. Intha Sowkya - Kapi - T (RS) (Started with anu pallavi)
9. Thani
10. Virutham - Hamsanandi, Sindhu Bhairavi
11. VenkatAchala Nilayam - SindhuBhairavi - PD
12. EnglishNote
13. mangalam
TVS sang with lots of energy, but something was missing.
The concert was more predictable.
Also, second day in a row, to listen to same kapi is a disappointment.
I did like his subhapanthuvarali
Thani was electrifying, really enjoyed it.

In such large (outdoor) listening venues, it will be best to devote a mic for the shruti.shubhapantuvarALi is best with a loud shruti,
But you're talking about Smt Jayanthi Kumaresh's kApi I think. Now come on, it was a different venue! Also, second day in a row, to listen to same kapi is a disappointment.

Well, TKV accompanied really well, but I like the MMI style accompanied by knife-precision violinists ... I would love to listen to TVS with S Varadarajan!TVS sang with lots of energy, but something was missing

TKV did play well.
I was talking about the something missing in TVS singing itself.
May be its sowkyam.
Two suggestions for the organizers:
1. Why can't they make a path using sand or saw dust to the gates, instead of making people walk in the slimy mud.
2. For a month long concert, they can atleast have a small cafteria or something to provide snacks (atleast a coffe or tea)
for people coming from far of places. There is only one hotel Anand Vihar walkable from the grounds.

So true that TVS concerts are predictable. I stopped attending them for a while. He is quite overwhelming, if you have not listened to him before. His swaras notwithstanding, they dont have the same 'laalitya' (i cant find a english word-exuberance is close by probably) as MMI. Hmmm.... well on second thoughts, can anybody get anywhere close to mmi in that aspect!

TVS's Kapi is something always special. I got addicted to him by listening to the very same Intha sowkyam decades back in a park concert in 1st block Jayanagar. I did not even know who he was at that time!
Yes. To some extent he is repetitive. But so was MS. I always feel that they consciously keep it that way, in order to make each and evey concert a successful one. Not too much experimentation. In a way it is like reading PG Wodehouse. It will amaze you the first time. Should not read two of them one after the other. Need some gap before taking up another, when you feel the greatness once again.
Interestingly no other artist other than TVS follows the MMI bani in spite of its acknowledged greatness. I am sure TVS will be very busy travelling all over the country/ world in the coming year, as it is the centenary year of MMI.

Let us wait and watch!Interestingly no other artist other than TVS follows the MMI bani in spite of its acknowledged greatness.

Can't have been that!I was talking about the something missing in TVS singing itself.

Maybe you mean "flair"? I don't know what lAlitya means, but probably between MMI & TVS, that's a little different.matterwaves wrote:they dont have the same 'laalitya' (i cant find a english word-exuberance is close by probably)

I heard TVS a couple of days before @ Ayodhya Mandapam after a hiatus. He didn't offer any thing new. I also didn't expect. But I tell U it was an excellent concert. His manodharmam ruled that day and all looked quite new to me.His svarams @ pallavi for rAma bhakthi sAmrajyam sang in tandem with his son;his Poorvi kalyAni and HindOlam alapanais and the songs iniyAhilum ninai manamE and rAmanakku mannan mudi - the niravals @ thanniharilla dAsarati and pattam katta Etravan-di were all excellent.sorry I don't know any other equivalent word.TVS is definitely one of the notable CM artist who is defenitely in the league of his illustrious uncle MMI.
The main Sabkarabharanam alapanai was by Mahadevan which was o.k but again TVS stole the lime light in svaraprastharam especially when he anchored in thArasthayi ma,I felt a divine vibration. It is totally true when TMK himself endorsed TVS's voice as a unique & powerful one in CM.

I didn't know that! TMK himself is extremely gifted on that count! (And it must take very disciplined and cleverly-designed practice to create and maintain the huge range he's got!)
