Sangeetha Swaminathan's Mother's Day Concert in Detroit

Post by sampoorna »

Vocal: Smt. Sangeetha Swaminathan
Violin: Kum. Keerthana Shankar
Mrudangam: Sri Vinod Seetharaman

This concert was part of the Sarovar Music festival held by the Great Lakes Aaradhana Committee of Detroit on Sunday May 8th. After a good Harikatha by Sri T. N. Seshagopalan in the morning, we had a nice mother's day buffet and immediately went to attend Smt. Sangeetha Swaminathan's concert. Here is the list of songs she sang.

Pagavari bodhana (varnam) - Hamsadhwani - Adi - Patanam
Ninnu juchi - Sowrashtram - Adi - Patanam (K)
Dwaithamu sukhama - Reetigowla - Adi - Thyagaraja
Sujana manasa - Hamsanandi - Adi - GNB (A,K)
Sashivadana bhaktajanavana - Chandrajyoti - Adi - Thyagaraja
Brovu brovumani vedithe - Keeravani - Mishra chapu - Shyama Sastry (A, N @ Shyama Krishna sahodari, K, T)
Amma kripa thandai - ? - ? - Mazhavai Chidambara Bharati
Darshan darshan - ?
Thillana - ?

A - alapana; N - neraval; K - kalpanaswarams; T - tani

I enjoyed this concert very much. I was not familiar with most of the songs and my child helped me with recognizing some of the ragas. I enjoyed the keeravani piece a lot (I started enjoying keeravani after repeatedly listening to Sri Neyveli's keeravani) and it was a treat to listen to this on Mother's Day. She was deep into the concert by then and was coaxing the talli (mother) Sri Lalithe.

I was impressed by the the violinist who is brought up in US. How talented kids are now a days. As the lady who gave the vote of thanks mentioned - we have to appreciate the mother who did so much to nurture the child. It takes so much to bring up good well-rounded children! Of course Sri Vinod Seetharaman did a great job supporting the artists.

I wish I can learn much more of the technical details so that I can write about them in the future. For now I hope this writeup will be ok for a first-timer. I enjoyed the concert thoroughly and am enjoying writing this up.

Yup. Learns vocal from Sri Maudrai Sundar, and violin from Delhi Sundararajan. She's boss.

Sri Rajeshnat,

Thankyou. Yes. Keerthana and Kamya are sisters and both of them are just as talented. Sri mri_fan is correct and they learned violin from Sri Jayshankar Balan as well.

This is a composition of G.N.Balasubramaniam, not Thyagaraja.
