Pictures of Melody

Post by Shreya Devnath »

For the first ever time- a pictorial series on Carnatic music legends, thoroughly researched, with a racy narrative style and fabulous hand-illustrated pictures. Pictures of Melody series offers an invaluable experience for the melody driven.

"The biography on Amma has come out wonderfully well and I am sure that kids will love reading this. One must commend the author for her lucid and smooth-flowing narrative for bringing out in an encapsulated form all major events in Amma's life" Radha Viswanathan, daughter and disciple of MS Subbulakshmi

“Lakshmi Devnath has rendered a yeoman service to recapture the glorious era of GNB. Lakshmi has not missed any significant event and her wonderful script along with the excellent pictorial presentation makes us re-live the past.” G N Balakrishnan & G B Bhuvaneswaran (brother and son of GNB respectively)
Dear Rasika,

I introduce myself to you as Lakshmi Devnath. I am a freelance writer based in Chennai. My area of focus is Indian culture and heritage, particularly South Indian Classical music. I have written over 200 articles in the Hindu and other publications in this area. I am also the author of the authorised biography of the ace violinist Lalgudi G Jayaraman, to be published by Harper Collins shortly.

I write to you now regarding my latest venture, Pictures of Melody. It proposes a series of graphic novels on the lives of Carnatic Music legends, both musicians and composers. It is the first ever pictorial series in this area. The first issue on M S Subbulakshmi is ready and is already hitting the stands. "M S Subbulakshmi, the Queen of Song" gives readers the life-story of the unparalleled songstress in an encapsulated but complete form, through over a 100 hand-illustrated frames over 24 pages. As you can see above, It has been endorsed wholeheartedly by her daughter and disciple, Radha Viswanathan. The full endorsement and all other details regarding the book and the series can be found in my website http://www.lakshmidevnath.com. The next issue on GN Balasubramaniam will be brought out within a month.

This series aims at exposing the young and the interested to the lives of Carnatic Music legends. It looks to pass on the rich heritage of Carnatic Music onto the younger generation, in a form that appeals to them. Pictorials or graphic novels are of-course beyond barriers of age, and hence this venture on my part.

Further details and previews of the books can be found in my website http://www.lakshmidevnath.com. Books can be purchased from http://www.Kalakendra.com (the website of Swathi Soft Solutions, my marketing partner in this venture)

I would be happy for any support you can lend me in this venture.

Regards,

Lakshmi Devnath

I had a quick look at the sample pages available on website http://www.lakshmidevnath.com/pictorial-biography.php. The books are similar in format to the Amar Chitra Katha books and make very interesting reading.

Hope you can come out with many titles. I am sure these books will be cherished by music lovers both young and old.

Smt Lakshmi Devnath: Thanks for posting about this (on multiple threads). The graphic novel looks very interesting. As Mohan said, it reminds me of Amar Chitra Katha. I hope to pick up a copy soon. I see from your website that you were going to do a series on GNB and others as well. My best wishes for your projects...

I have read your biography of Sri Lalgudi with much interest. I enjoyed the book reading during the maestro's 80th with PC Ramakrishna.

And finally, welcome to the forum. I hope you will participate in many of our discussions on wide-ranging topics.

Thank you. The books are available at all Landmark stores as well as other book stores (List available on our website) and the Kalakendra website. This has been my passion project for a long time and I aim to make it a full fledged series. I hope to receive the encouragement that will allow me to do this.

The biography of Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman is being published by Harper Collins and will hopefully be out by the end of the year. I'm glad you enjoyed the book-reading.

Thank you again, for your kind words of encouragement and welcome.
