Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
Though its a bit early, thought of putting it up here to plan it out accordingly. Senior members (VKV, SN, MKR etc.. ) and other rasikas may kindly express their opinions on this. My only request, that it should be on a sunday.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
Dear Rasikas,
I have given a Video copy of our Global Rasikas Meet 2010 to Sri Trichy Sankaran. Sri Mahavishnu our Rasika who is in Canada, collected the copy from Sri Trichy Sankaran and sent them to our moderators Sri cmlover and Sri Lakshman Ragaday.
Sri Lakshman Ragaday sent a mail thanking for the Video copy. He mentioned that after seeing the Video he was able to connect the names with the faces after seeing the Video.
[ Dear sri.Nageswaran: Just today I received in the mail the three CDs you had sent through Ramesh> Sorry for the delay in getting them because of various reasons.
Thanks so very much for being so thoughtful and kind enough to take the trouble to send these discs to me. I am indeed fortunate and honoured to be your friend.
I have only looked at the photos file and the first part of the 2011 rasikas meet so far and I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw. Finally I could connect some of the familiar names of rasikapriyans with faces. Hope one of these days I will be able to attend a rasikas meet.
With my very best wishes to you and the family.
Lakshman.]
The above information is suffice to confirm the importance of the Annual meet of our Rasikas.
Global Rasikas meet 2011 will encourage many other Global Rasikas to attend the meet and we will be able to connect more of our Rasikas after the meet.
I would like to know the opinion of the Rasikas about the Global Rasikas meet for this year 2011.
The main Rasika Sri VKV IS NOT COMING TO India during the December 2011.
Sri VKV was instrumental in the Rasikas meet in 2009 and 2010.
I was able to coordinate with him in the above two Rasikas meet.
I am also not very active now because of health problem.
However I would be happy if some of the Rasikas to come forward in organizing
our meet. I am always available for any help that may be required by the new organizer and moderators.
The following points are put forward by the U/S for the meet.
1.Last year the total expenditure for our meet was RS.40,000/=.
Our Admin Sri Srikris opines that no voluntary contributions is to be collected from the Rasikas. How we can meet the requirement of the funds?
2.I feel that providing lunch for the Rasikas after the meet is necessary.
The approximate amount required for the same depends on the attendance.
3.IF SRI CIENU obliges, we can arrange for a short duration concert of
Miss IYSWARAYA SRINIVASAN.
Confirmation of the meet can be decided only after the opinions from
the large number of Global Rasikas. This will help the global Rasikas,
Plans’ for their trip to India.
4.December 18 th [Sunday], 2011 may be convenient for all the Rasikas.
We have our meet from morning 09.30 TO 12.30.
I would request all the Rasikas convey their opinions latest by 20 09.2011 so
that suitable decisions can be taken.

I don't think it is necessary to spend Rs40,000 on such an event. Perhaps something rather informal can involve rasikas attending a concert or lec-dem followed by tea/lunch at a nearby eatery. Rasikas can pay for their own meal.

The idea of having rasikas meet is indeed nice but we should work out how to organise it. As one forum member has said, no need for shawls and patting each other's back. we can have an informal meet where we can exchange views and ideas. No need for making it a function where someone keeps talking endlessly and other are made to just sit and listen. we can also do away with concerts as the dec season is already overloaded with concerts. Can someone share some novel amd meaningful way of conducting this forum meet? As the meeting gets on till lunch time, we could organise a simple lunch. In fact, it was over lunch that we got to interatct with everyone! So that serves a dual purpose. those coming can pay in advance towards their lunch cost which can be fixed by Mr.Nageswaran.
As last year, I can get the RKM school hall for the meet provided the date is confirmed in advance.

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
Dear Rasikas,
The suggestion from MRS. Radhabhasker for providing a simple lunch is correct
for the interaction of the Rasikas.
If we are particular to curtail our expenses, we can skip the lunch and the likely expenses to be met will be;
1. Photo & Video;-------------------------------------------------------- RS. 4000/=
2. Token Sanmanam to Artists; ----[ RS.300+ 100 + 100}---------- RS. 600/=
3. Labour charges for the Hall arrangements; ------------------------ RS. 1200/=
4. Making the Global Rasikas Meet 2011 Banner; ------------------ RS. 1500/=
5. Misc and unforeseen expenses; -------------------------------------- RS. 700/=
----------------
Total anticipated Expenses; -------------------RS. 8000/=
----------------
[MR Cienu should excuse me for proposing a paltry Sanmanam to the artists].
MRS. Radhabhasker, our forum member had already expressed about the booking of the hall for us this year also.
The suggestion to have our meet this year also is to facilitate the Global Rasikas Coming to Chennai for the December music season [who have missed the last year meet] can interact with the other Global Rasikas and the Rasikas in India who may attend our meet.
If the response from the majority of the Rasikas is positive, then we can plan further.

That is great first step of yours
All,
Last year we had it on Dec 19th , Sunday , this year Let us have it on Dec 18th ,2011 Sunday. I am assuming the next Sunday Dec 25th will be a hectic kutcheri day for all of us and hence it is better to finish off on Sunday,Dec 18th, 2011.
On a side note this Dec and Jan 1st/2nd week I(rajesh) , may not be available during those 2 months(50-50, due to other commitments).
nAgeshwaran Sir,
I will call you in few days or max this weekend and discuss with you.

Last year, we actually had two meets, the second being the "interactive session" with Trichy Sankaran.radha bhaskar wrote:The idea of having rasikas meet is indeed nice but we should work out how to organise it. A meet can be just an open door for people who normally only talk to each other online, or it can be some music-associated happening, or it can be a combination of the two. It has been good, over the past years, to listen to the words of VKV and co, about MSS. The TS event was excellent, although a little too much time was spent with others speaking. It has been good to hear members' introductions at the microphone. All these component parts have been good experiences, but they do not have to become an annual formula. Perhaps this year might be the year for social meet with snacks. More time spent speaking to each other, and less time sitting in rows facing a stage or microphone.
I do hope that that Rasikas 2011 will happen, and that it will be a feature of every December in the future. It can be different every year. There are very few bad ideas!

The short duration concert is being arranged to break the monotony of the speeches
for three hours by the guest speakers and that of the Rasikas during the introductions.
I hope that this arrangement will be OK.

If we use a banner without the year printed, we can probably use it year after year for a few years. That will help curtail expenses.

I agree with Nick's thoughts in post #18. Keep it informal and social - in the thick of the music season no need for another concert even.
Also, no need for a banner when we all know why we are there. Also, does Rs 4000 need to spent on a photographer. I am sure one or more of the rasikas will take photos of the event. That will reduce expenses by half!

Apparently a communication gap here. I did not suggest that voluntary contributions should not be collected. Our Admin Sri Srikris opines that no voluntary contributions is to be collected from the Rasikas. How we can meet the requirement of the funds?
What I had rather suggested was to secure the funding commitments from members and then plan accordingly for an event that will fit the budget, rather than plan for something big and fall short of funds.
The person who organizes the event should not be put to the embarrassing position of having to pay out of their own pockets just because contributions fell short of budget.

God willing I hope to be in Chennai during the early part of December. Enjoyed the last meeting in 2010 in Mr.Nageswaran's house.
Need to keep it simple and participatory--no need for speeches-personally concert is NOT necessary. Wherever it is held it should not burden one person for the expenses.
Depending upon the "age-mix" of the audience, I volunteer to show some "mock imitations" of the artistes of my era(ARI,SSI,GNB etc),anecdotes too "racy" to be published in the forum==nothing serious or thought provoking just fun!!

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
My view: The simpler the arrangements, the better the benefits from the meeting. We meet here on Rasikas.org regularly. We discuss many things about music here. The need and desire for such a meeting is really to meet others whose names we know, but whom we haven't met in person. This cannot happen if we sit in rows of chairs, listening to speeches (introductions). We need to circulate in order to meet as many rasikas as possible. So, the chairs can be lined along the walls, leaving enough room for us to meet each other, one on one, walking around.
Our last Rasikas meeting in Bengaluru (thanks to Cienu), was informal, with no fuss and lots of hospitality--no mikes, photographer or videographer, no banner, no name tags. Yet, Cienu and others, with photographs and videos made us feel as if we were part of it.
My suggestions: Skip lunch, but have coffee/tea (Nick, not forgetting you) and snack at the very beginning, so that the early ones can converse with each other over coffee/tea and do the socializing. As others arrive, they can join in. Let's say, we meet at 9-30 as we did last time, and spend an hour in conversation. !0-30to 11-30, we can have a musical interlude My request: if Vilasini is available, to hear our (late) Ramaraj's compositions from her--mikeless). A good way to remember and honor him, also invite his family. 11-30 to 12-30, more informal meeting, and then, off to wherever we are heading, to listen to music.
Radha Bhaskar,
It's generous and gracious of you both to take care of the hall again. As many of us did last year, I would only be too glad to chip in.
However, if it's going to be a speech rally and a shawl festival, I'm not planning to be there. Last year, I could stay only until the tea break. Believe me, I met folks only 'before' the meeting and during the tea break, and then I had to leave. Remember, the time keeper, our VKV is not going to be there
Nageswaran had more than his share in responsibilities. It was all too much work for him.
So, really, no speeches, please! I'm all for all of us to get a chance to talk to as many fellow-members as possible.
Rajesh,
Like you, I won't be able to make it to the first suggested date. Another thing. We can refresh our memories by going to the pictures of the last season meet and greet each other by name, if we do our homework in connecting faces with names!
I hope the simple meet is going to be a grand occasion
Srkris,
Hope you are going to be in Chennai then. We will wish you and Pavithra a happy anniversary in person, then!

Ramesh,
Our posts crossed. Good to know you are going to be in Chennai then. Yes, your impersonations will fit right in, after the mini-concert!
Another vote for 'simple'. We can't forget how it all started with a pack of mixture Bharath carried with him to meet others. One turned up (who was it?) and he said that they happily shared the snack between them! Hope Bharath can make it this time.

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
1. Like last year, we will arrange the RKM hall for the function and as I said earlier, please confirm the date as the school also has many activities in weekends for which they use their hall. All may agree that during the dec. season, even the drawing rooms of houses become concert halls and to get a hall is a herculean task!
2. As for banner, I only got it made but dont remember if teh year was mentioned. even if it is so, we can mask the year as 2011 as it is only going to be an informal meet.
3. You may remember that last year, I had taken photo of all the events and published it in samudhra magazine. Likewise myself and some other membres could take photos for our personal record. no need for any video as it is going to be an informal meet.
4.Since VKV sir will not be coming this season and as Mr.Nageswaran may find it difficult to organise things, I offer to make the necessary arrangements provided it is kept simple. As said earlier, no shawls or function . we will not have any stage. We can arrange the chairs in a cirlcle and pass on the hand mike so that all get a chance to share their views.
5. No need for any concerts. Please think of anything more interesting as mentioned by Mr.Ramasubramaniam
6. After you decide lunch or coffee/snacks please let me know - I can arrange it and save the trouble for mr.nageswaran. somebody can suggest how to work out the sharing of expenses for the same. If it is just snacks, maybe we can ask Radel (radhika madam who is an active forum member) to sponsor it!
members are requested to share their views so that the meet becomes memorable for everybody!

Everything that has been said... very much agree. Just one small point: I would rather put Rs.100 in a box than ask any one person or their company to contribute sponsorship. Our musical life-giving blood transfusions come to us, in Chennai, all year, mostly courtesy of the the sponsors. Let us not put more strain on their sponsorship rupees, or put a friend in an embarrassing position where they may see little commercial advantage in the sponsorship, but be embarrassed to say no.

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
It was just a thought.Yes, I fully agree with nick but the point is how to collect money from each individual. Maybe the money can be handed over at the venue - in that case forum members can confirm online about their attendance. Otherwise what happens is that one person will have to shell out the money and then he may not even get it back. It is a very delicate situation.

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
Dear Rasikas,
There was a lukewarm response from the Rasikas when Sri Semmu 86 suggested for the Global Rasikas meet 2011 in July 2011.
Since Sri VKV was also not coming to Chennai in December this year, I thought that we may not be conducting the meet this year.
I had a talk with MRS.Radhabhaskar on a different topic. Then MRS.Radhabhaskar
informed me to decide about our meet early so that she can arrange the RKM School hall booking for our meet.
Then only I have put in my thoughts about the Global Rasikas Meet 2011 on 14.09.2011.
I am overwhelmed by the positive response from many Rasikas and I thank all the Rasikas.
To sum up the ideas given by many Rasikas, the following points are touched upon.
1.We are going to have the Global Rasikas MEET 2011
ON 18.12.2011[SUNDAY] from 09.30. To 12.30 hrs.2.
I am thankful to MRS.Radhabhasker in arranging the RKM north branch school hall for our meet [the same venue where in we had our Global Rasikas Meet in December 2010].
3.The theme of this year’s meet will be “FOR THE RASIKAS, BY THE RASIKAS” and the meet will be informal with no ponnadais, no concert etc.
4.As suggested by Arasi madam, the chairs will be arranged in a circle with the centre area free enough for the individual Rasikas to introduce themselves with their User ID, Real Name, where from they are coming,a brief profile of them not exceeding 2 to 3 minutes only.
We will be missing the company of Arasi this year.
With 50-50 chances, I hope that Sri Rajesh our correspondent will be able to attend our meet.
Coffee / Tea and snacks will be served around 11.00 hrs.[ MR. Nick should be happy about this news].
5 Sri M.K.Ramasubramanian our senior Rasika will entertain us with the mimicry of the legendary artists.
6.Balance of the Rasikas attending the meet will do the self introductions if this was not completed in the beginning.
7.The expenses budgeted for RS.4000/= is for Photography [RS.1000/=] and Video coverage [RE.3000/=].
As suggested by Sri Mohan, we can request our forum Rasika Sri MDS RAJU for taking the photos as he usually does in our functions earlier. We can save RS.1000/=
I feel that Video coverage must be done for posterity sake. I f any of the Rasikas are having Handy cams it would also be fine.
The expense of RS.1200/= for making the banner will be avoided by using the old banner by masking the year or correcting the 0 with 1 in the year.
The revised estimate will be
a]. Video coverage hiring; ------------------------------RS.3000/=
b]. Labour charges for arranging the chairs, banner fixing,
mike set arrangements, etc -------------------------------------------- RS 1200/=
c]. Coffee / Tea and snacks; -------------------------------------------- RS.1000/=
d]. Misc and unforeseen expenses--------------------------------------- RS. 800/=
---------------
TOTAL RS.6000/=
-----------------
With the clearance for collecting voluntary donations from the Rasikas given by our Admin SRIKRIS, we may collect a very small donation from the Rasikas to cover the expenses. I will work it out and inform the amount.
All said and done, as MRS.Radhabhaskar suggested, we can have a simple lunch. Rasikas can give their opinion.
I would be happy if our Admin and all the three moderators all attend the Global Rasikas Meet 2011.

# FOR THE RASIKAS, BY THE RASIKAS , means even vidwans and vidushis can also join , as every vidwan and vidushi is also a rasika, though arasiakkka will be missed . I do know few musicians will have a concert so bad luck .S.NAGESWARAN wrote: 3.The theme of this year’s meet will be “FOR THE RASIKAS, BY THE RASIKAS” and the meet will be informal with no ponnadais, no concert etc.

# I was just thinking since Coffee/Tea and Snacks is given , we will buy a big cake and cut it and have some puffs and cakes for that occassion. We can skip organizing lunch as many of us are not interested.(I personally dont like lunch too in any case)
# Videography is fine ,it certainly gives best of posterity, though each of us must be willing to lose our visual anonymity. Last year 20 of us lost , this year let 100 of us lose.
# Nageshwaran Sir, let us have a budget of 10,000 instead of 6000 Rs , we can have 5 to 10 volunteers paying that money upfront (I am one of them for sure that is 100% whether i am coming or not), even if we collect bit more we can use it for next year get together or we can open a thread in our forum that "money is swindled in rasikas 2011 meet" in Jan 2012
# That only leaves us the most difficult part , what do we do sitting in a circle for 3 hours , I guess that is where we have a googly in place , when MKR sir talks without VKV Sir to moderate, the time will just fly. I once had a chance to be with MKR sir when he dropped me in his car this year in US , he can not only mimic but can also sing like "antha kAlathu ariyAtha ariyakudi" (with jilujiluppu and viruviruppu) .
When Patnam Subramaniam Iyer can sing one day ragam, second day tanam and third day pallavi in begada , for another patnam ramasubramaniam Iyer sir it is just too easy

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
(I suppose we have to have something to argue about after the meet ]
Perhaps we should just provide chairs around the room and let people be mobile?
Could we even go so far as to dispense with mass introductions. Some of us are not microphone shy, others are: it leads to certain people being very well known, and others diving under a chair! I sometimes think that the whole of Chennai knows about my life and love of carnatic music. I also think they are fed up with hearing about it :$
Just adding to the brainstorming here.
Arasi not coming?
No VKV, No Arasi ;( ... I think I might as well go to London for December! Except... it will be warm here, and there will be music

I am in London and will be travelling to Chennai in November, so coming back again in December may be hard. Is there a possibility of having our meet sometime between Nov 6th to 18th?

If not, then perhaps we could have another get-together. Maybe a couple of tables for lunch at one of the less pressured hotels like Vasantha Bhavan?

Re: Rasikas meet Dec 2011 @ Chennai
Sure, another one in November might be perfect, even if we don't have as many people attending. A small gathering will be just right if it is to be informal and personal. In fact we don't need to hold one big meet every year. It can be a monthly or quarterly meet-up somewhere.

Dear Sri Srkris,
November is too early for the overseas Rasikas to arrive at Chennai.
However,The Rasikas at Chennai will be glad to meet you informally.
13.11.2011, being a Sunday will be convenient to meet you in large numbers.
Perhaps we can decide to meet from 5 PM TO 6 PM at my home.
I request you to consider if this is convenient to you and the Chennai Rasikas.
I would be happy if you can come with your wife.

If it it a voting matter, then I vote for lunch. Due to my peculiar life habits, it will be my breakfast!
mohan: I look forward to meeting you. Your carnatic corner was one of my first online music resources; it must have been one of the first on the www. Great work!

I suggest that like last year, those who are planning to come for the meet can register online from now on. Then, we will have a rough idea about the strength and can also plan the agenda accordingly.

Dear brother-member, Ramasubramanian M.K., I extremely feel happy to spend with all our brother & sister-members like you on this memorable occasion. I feel even happier if we can all make this meet a memorable, regular and annual event in discussing things and by taking some relevant steps in quickly and efficiently enlightening our kids in different parts of this globe in our music. In this connection I have some proposals in this regard to implement them with all your whole hearted co-operation. amsharma
