On July 21st, Priya sisters gave a performance in Hyderabad. It was organized by Sri Veda vyasa Vidya Vignana Varidhi,an organization that provides scholarships to students who excel academics but hail from financially weak backgrounds. The concert was scheduled for 5:30pm but it began at 7:30pm. There was a scholarship conferment to the kids for one hour and then the concert followed.
There was no information about the concert anywhere and thus very less people got to know about it. The turn out of audience for a concert of Priya sisters is very huge for their popularity in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. But this time, the concert hall was filled with people here and there. That was the sad part. Wish more people turned up for the concert.
And if the concert began in the scheduled time we would have a 3 hours concert, but unfortunately the concert was shorter. It ended within 2 hours. However no complaints. Whatever was sung was perfectly entertaining. The concert had popular pieces which were enjoyed by everyone. The duo was accompanied by M A Krishnaswamy on Violin, Patri Satish Kumar on the mridangam and B S Purushothaman on Kanjira.
The song list
1. Mahaganapathim-Nata-Dikshitar[S]
2. Maa Pala Velasi-Asaaveri-Thyagaraja
3. Rama nannu Brovara-Harikhamboji-Thyagaraja[R,S]
4. Amba Neelambari-Neelambari-Ponniah Pillai
5. Meenakshi Me mudham-Poorvikalyani-Dikshitar[R,N,S,T]
6. Thelisithey-Revathi-Annamacharya
5. Govind Damodar-Sarasangi-Santh Bilva Mangal thakur
7. Slokam in Vaasanthi,Hamasanandhi,Hindolam
8. Tholliyunu Marakku-Hindolam-Annamacharya
9. Dolalugumu-Yamankalyani-Sai bhajan
10. Mangalam
The concert began with the Nata krithi and a very brisk swarakalpana followed. The Thyagaraja krithi in Asaveri was rendered well. Especially the pronunciation of the lyrics was perfect which is pretty big according to me. Not many singers take care of the way they pronounce the lyrics. There was an alapana of Harikhamboji by Haripriya followed by another famous composition immortalized by MSS. People really enjoyed this. The Neelambari composition was beautifully rendered. The alapana of Poorvikalyani was initiated by Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya carried it on for a long while later. I was hoping this would be a sub main too for I really expected three compositions to be dealt in detai like the way they generally do. But of course the time was on the higher side. The magnum opus "Meenakshi Me mudham" was sung as the main piece. With a beautiful neraval and swarakalpana at the lines "Meenalochani Pashamochani". Thaniavarthanam followed and was amazing as usual. The latter half of the concert had light compositions. I personally liked the bhajan in Sarasangi. The slokam was also rendered very well. To summarize, I'd say it was a nice concert!

They always present satisfactory concerts. Meenakshi memudham is always a winner. What a composition! It appears that they intelligently made up for lost time in presenting a number of thukkadas.
They always have MAK as violin. Although a great vidwan, never exerts himself- unfortunately never impressive. I recently heard his brother MA sundaresan in nada neeraajanam. He was all energy.
Patri and Purushaottaman are definitely a powerful team. Patri especially takes it to a crescendo everytime during tani and doesn't stop till there is a good applause!

Absolutely right. Their pronunciation remains perfect. This is important as the sahitya of the kriti is its life.Especially the pronunciation of the lyrics was perfect which is pretty big according to me. Not many singers take care of the way they pronounce the lyrics.
Hearing Priya sisters sing Meenakshi Memudam is always a delight.

Just like how balaji , gokul (tyagarajadasa)have opened a thread for bombay, you also open one for Hyderabad/secundrabad. It would help immensely. Thanks for your review.
