Abhishek Iyer - Toronto concert Aug 14, 2011

Post by mahavishnu »

Sri Abhishek Iyer (fellow forumite and disciple of Smt Raji Gopalakrishnan) - Vocal
Vidwan Sri VVS Murari - Violin
Sri Aravind Venkatraman - Mridangam (disciple of Sri Trichy Sankaran)
Sri Karthi Venkataraman - Khanjira

I am delighted to present a short report on our fellow forumite Abishek's debut concert in Toronto. Abhishek, who posts under that name in the forum, is a precocious seventeen year old kid with an amazing sense of manodharmam, strong stage presence and a bucket load of talent. To top it all off, he has an incredible voice that can handle complex brighas while maintaining excellent fidelity in the higher octaves.

The song list:

1. VanajAkshirO - Kalyani varnam
2. Ekadantam - Bilahari - Misrachapu MD (S)
3. siva siva enarAdha - pantuvarALi - T (RNS)
4. Ninnuvina mari galadA - ritigowla - SS
5. Gathi neeyE endru - tOdi- ambujam Krishna (RNST)
6. rAkA sasivadanA - TakkA - T
7. RTP - Triraga pallavi: kamas, gowrimanohari, ranjani; Khanda jati ata
Pallavi line:
mA kamAsOtsvapriya lAsinim (in khamas, first lagu)
Gowrimanohari mAnini (in Gowrimanohari, second lagu)
SadAniranjani ranjini, mAmava (in Ranjani, drutam).
[ Ragamalika swarams in hamsanadham, bagesri, dvijavanti (Misra?), revati ]

9. Short viruttam: nanmaiyum selvamum nAlum nalgumE, followed by
rAmanamE thudi manamE - Desh - TSI
10. (I had to step out)
11. Mangalam

As you can see from the weighty songlist, Abhishek presented a very elegantly planned concert. There were many highlights. The fast paced sivasiva ena radha in Pantuvarali was very well handled. When he broke into the neraval in "Agamamula nutiyunchi", it became clear that Abhishek is no amateur. While the swarams were a bit on the pacy side, his control of talam was quite impeccable. It became apparent that he has learned this composition from the TM Tyaragaran (and SSI) tradition, when he used a very elegant koraippu to end the kalpana swarams. The Todi piece was also taught to him by Smt Raji Gopalakrishnan who had directly learned it from the tunesmith SSI.

The pallavi was beautifully organized. It is a fairly complex pallavi, and Abhishek performed trikalam on the pallavi line and traversed between the three ragams with a sense of ease. At this point, it did not seem like a debut concert at all, but it felt like listening to a singer who has been on the stage for several decades. I walked away from the concert extremely impressed, for he far exceeded my expectations. Abhishek sings with the maturity that you expect from a veteran.

Talking of veterans, VVS Murari was incredible. His violin accompaniment was supportive, encouraging and it enabled Abhishek to reach extraordinary heights with his own manodharmam. All the while, Murari did this without interference. It is indeed Abhishek's good fortune that he got a top-ranked vidwan to join him on stage on his debut. Murari's bowing was like VVS, especially in the Todi alapanai and his tAnam was textbook perfect.

The percussion accompaniment was adequate. The young mridangist had a good sound, characteristic of the pudukkottai school, but it felt like he has a long road ahead in terms of kriti accompaniment, anticipation and thoppi use. He needs to look no further than his guru's recordings to get a firm handle on this; Sri TS is the last word in all three.

So, the next time you see a review from Abhishek, read it carefully. This is no armchair rasika but a serious vidwan in the making. This boy knows what he is talking about and more. If this is his debut concert, I can only imagine what the future has in store for him.

Abhishek has just finished high school earlier this summer and is entering the University of Toronto this fall. I wish him the very best in everything, both musically and otherwise.

This is the end of an excellent summer music season in Toronto. The fall line-up looks terrific. I am sure you will see a review or two, maybe even from Abhishek ;-)

Nice to learn that gauri manOhari was explored in this concert. I rather like the rAgam. ;) Pity that siMhEndramadhyamam, hEmavati and dharmavati get more time.

Abhishek Iyer,
In early 1950's your parama guru TRS mAmA went to the stage with GNB, mudikondan and Musiri as dignatary rasikas. Shri TRS confidently asked the organizers to give him any raga and TRS sang a on spot mukhari raga pallavi and got the first prize . And right now after 7 decades in your debut concert you are singing a tri raga pallavi in gowrimanohari punctuated with ,,, and ending with ranjani. WOW, your guru smt raji is a great musician who must have taught you that difficult todi and possibly pushed you to sing this pallavi. You are indeed blessed and privileged to be a student of Smt rAji (2 power 4 + 1 ). Best wishes in your musical career and keep it going  .

Was tAnam sung in all three ragas and how about rAgam was that also sung in three ragas.?
Any photos available ?
How long was the concert?
You have numbered 7 as rtp and 9 as viruththam , by any chance did you forget to mention the 8th number.

Rajesh, yes he sung tAnam and Alapanai in all three ragams in equal parts.
I don't think there was an 8; the error is mine.

From what Abhishek announced, he went to his guru and requested that she compose a pallavi for his debut in his three favourite ragams and she composed one on the spot.

The concert was a little over 3 hours ...

So happy for you Abhishek that it turned out to be a major performance! Happy and proud, fellow rasikA!
You are lucky to have such a guru as Raji Gopalkrishnan.
Congratulations on your graduation. All the best at the university and of course, with your pursuit of CM.
If only you would share gati nIyE enRu with us! One of my favorites of Ambujam Krishna which I haven't heard in ages.

Ramesh - thanks for that lovely review.
Abhishek, congratulations to you and your (justifiably proud) family , and best wishes - may all your wishes come true!
I second Arasi and request that you upload clips. I am sure your clips will erase the bad taste left by the c**p that gets uploaded on to youtube under the guise of 'encouraging talent' these days!

Mahavishnu,
I thank you too, for all the lovely reviews you bring us! Does September mean that you end your sabbatical year and cannot spend as much time with us? :(

Arasi: Thank you for your solicitude.

I have been back at work full-time as of July 1 ;( Come September, I will be busier due to teaching commitments, grant writing and the usual nonsense. But that doesn't mean I have to stop listening to or writing about good music :) I will be doing some new work on music cognition and this forum is a great place to bounce ideas related to those interests too.

Abhishek
Looks great . Interestingly looks like ramesh (mahavishnu )and you have a bit of similarity.God bless you.

Till the recording is shared , we will mull over this 2nd photo:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Let me do a bit of imagination here from the 2nd photo (what uday used to do once with Ariyakudi's photo)
The flask is open and you are just feeling a bit uncomfortable in your legs and feel like moving. The violinist is presently not bowing and attempting to capture your manodharmam in full. The mridangist is just playing with the kanjira artist joining. The tambura artist is smiling and feeling bit more satisfied right now.

Very likely you are in todi mel kAla neraval /swaras or more likely the raga maliga swaras of RTP.

Nice picture, Abhishek. Waiting for the music.

Rajesh,
Yes, a Uday-style of exercise.
Though our kids are super smart in learning CM in singing like the dESis, it's not easy for all of them to emulate the sitting position of the bhAgavatars that easily. naDai uDai bhAvanaigaL are more difficult to copy. Who minds? They sing as if they grew up on the tAmravarNi (don't protest--kAvEri tIram ;)

Abhishek, kudos and best wishes! I look forward to hearing some items from your concert. Interesting raga choices for the RTP and I too welcome gowrimanOhari's inclusion.
