10.manadhirkuhandhadhu – S.B
11.Mangalam

Somewhere in 85-86’ when listening to TVS in Sastry hall,I couldn’t identify the rAgam. So,I asked an young man of my age who was sitting next to me pensively listening,my doubt.Visibly irritated with a chidu chidu face he almost yelled at me ‘KANADA’. Suddenly I remembered this and that put a smile on my face while listening to SS.Yes,folks Ur guess is right. But I doubt;SS may not remember this incident.

Danseuse Chitra visweswaran, the chief guest left soon after the Todi kriti.Had she remained she would have surely danced for the KG kriti; it was so much soaked with bhAvam.wah…what a rendition !

All the 3 rAgams were sung splendidly.very difficult to grade them as 1,2,3.

The jOg was sung in style, reminded of a concert of Rashid khan I heard long back.SS touched the tunes of prabhO ganapathe, pramadhavanam, and panivizhum malar vanam that added different color and shades to this poetic rAga. Beautiful.

SS’s performance had a 100% homogeneous perfection in this concert,I would say.

SV’s reply of kannada was v.good so as the other rAgams.

Tvm Balaji played according to the main artist’s style and mood and his tani was excellent with strokes reminding me of karaikudi Mani.I know he is a disciple of PR.

So,let me finish with my signature whenever I hear a concert that lingers on me.

AhA…….What a performance! :P  :)

Ganeshkant,
Thanks for the rave-view. JOg would have been something. 'pani vizhum malar vanam'--such a beautiful line. Where is it from?
So, in the concert held at the Karnataka Sangha hall by KeraLites, there were a number of Thamizh songs by the Thamizh-speaking vocalist, after all--not all songs in Telugu, as he quipped in his blog. Wonder if old timers in the hall missed a kannaDa 'language' song--when they just got to hear a song in a namesake rAgam.
That kalayAmi nanda kamanIya bAlam (ST) would have pleased the MalayALam speaking crowd.
Yes, vENu gAna is a special song. The charaNam certainly conjures up an abhinayam-friendly scene.
Did you make a note of the pallavi line?
Sanjay is generous enough in uploading samples of his concerts fairly often in his blog. Looking forward to that moment (attaruNam) when we can hear something from this concert. 'attaruNam' was the song he had posted from one of his August concerts, and why do I have this reputation that I don't like bhairavi? ;)

Arasi, 'pani vizhum malar vanam' is a beautiful film song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtXXEYS-5Yk

Yes, Trichur brothers had sung a fair jOg in San Diego some time ago (as arasi had said then, I prefer our own [chala]nATTai). Hope Sanjay uploads at least the tAnam on YouTube...

bilahari,
Thanks! A nice, sedate movie song. Though meant for a dance, it's not at all the mexican jumping bean kind of a tune. As for the line, that's the best line of the whole song for me.
Yes, I get excited too when I hear a familiar tune in passing, when a rAgam is elaborated.

i left immediately after he started the tanam. can somebody explain the raga JOg. i enjoyed it very much thouhg i could not identify the raga. there were traces of hindolam in the lower octave and tilang i the upper octave..is it my imagination or is there is any linkage?

the varfied improvisations on the swaras for Kalyami was very good. though Tvm Balaji struggled a bit to anticipate...SV was top class. I could feel some of his phrases as good as Lalgudi...

U mean the pallavi line of RTP ? I have already mentioned in the main post.

And an interesting thing about pani vizhum...During one of our exhibitions in Jan' 09 in Hyderabad the T.N crowd(participants)pushed me forward to sing a Tamizh song when the organizers threw a party to us (exhibitors). The band was playing all hit songs from yesteryear Hindi films. So while walking from where I stood to the stage I decided to sing this song.I told my sruti to the tabla and key board players and sang the same.It was a phenomenal appreciation from the non-Tamizh crowd as well. They said they didn't understand the verse but the melody was caressing them.In fact I was attending an exhibition from 6/9 to 8/9/11 and many still remember and identify me with this song.Good.Its a great combo effort by IR,SPB and lyricist Vairamuthu. The film has other good nos.too.

Ganeshkant,
Sorrry, I overlooked the pallavi line when I went through the list at first. Your mention of 'pani vizhum malar vanam' captured my imagination and I got distracted. So, besides writing poetry, you also sing!

Sanjay has now put up a kAnaDA song--not a kannaDa one, in his blog. ST's mAmava sadA janani from the kannaDa state of KarnATaka, from a concert held by kalOPAsana. I don't remember hearing him sing to the accompaniment of Vittal Ramamuthi before. The mrudangist is new to me. Guruprasad on the ghaTam, I think. Hope Sanjay also gives us a chance to listen to a few minutes of that jOg RTP...

ganeshkant,
If you want to listen again to 'vENu gAna' set in gOkulam which you heard and the veteran danseuse missed, it's there on Sanjay's blog along with a few other songs from his Kerala concerts.

Was there anything for the "karnataka" rasika being a karnataka sangha concert? ;)
