H.S. Sudhindra

Post by gee »

Found this write up online on Sri HS Sudhindra, an excellent mridangam vidwan based in Bangalore. I am not sure if someone has already posted something about him, so I apologize in advance if I created a superfluous thread:

***
Vidwan Sri H.S.Sudhindra has been under the tutelage of the great gurus: Vidwan Sri. M. Vasudeva Rao and Vidwan Sri. Srimushnam. V. Raja Rao; two outstanding exponents of the art of playing mridangam who are widely respected both as performers and teachers.

He started to perform at the tender age of thirteen and has never looked back. He passed his Vidwat exam conducted by the Government of Karnataka and secured the first rank. He is an 'A' graded artist and performs for All India Radio, Doordarshan, and other broadcasting channels. His strict adherence to tradition, aesthetic sense, innovative approach, and adaptability to different styles of music has received acclaim from musicians, connoisseurs, laymen and the media alike. He is deeply devoted and committed to the field of music.

Apart from being a much sought-after percussionist in Bangalore, he has been performing regularly during the December season at Chennai since 1994. He has also performed all over the globe, including in the well known Cleveland Tyagaraja Festival. He is the receipient of numerous awards and titles, and has published papers and given a number of lecture demonstrations on topics related to percussion in Carnatic Music.

He is the founder trustee and principal of Suswaralaya College Of Music. Through this institution, Vidwan Sri H.S.Sudhindra is rendering great service to the cause of Music.

Personally, I think he is a really great connoisseur of music, and of course is an excellent musician. He is also a very decent human being as well and is extremely devoted to the field of music. Thoughts and opinions, everyone?

I have had the opportunity to listen to Sri Sudheendra on many occasions...definitely great. His understanding of laya is amazing. Also, I really like how he clearly enjoys the music on stage and is always smiling. It makes me want to smile too. :)

Some facets of Vid. H.S. Sudhindra that have not been mentioned:
He has done a great service to Karnatic musicians by bringing out the Directory of musicians.
And he has this wonderful ability to play according to the main artist he accompanies- he plays with so much softness and grace for vainikas, and with just the right amount of flair for vocalists, according to their style - but at all times, never overshadows the main artist either in volume or in pyrotechnics, which he reserves for the Tani. There of course the audience is treated to a display of his vidwat.
He is so unassuming and friendly, too!

Yes! I have heard good things about this project, and I was about to mention this in this forum.

Well said! Yes, I forgot to mention the directory :) I think there is a link on the Facebook page that talks about the directory.

I also want to add one more thing regarding how he plays (in addition to what Radhika already said) - it seems like he always adjusts his accompanying style to favor the level of the artist and the mood of the crowd. Even in his tani - he won't play a 20 minute tani if it is not appropriate.
