T.M.Krishna-Bhairavi Music Circle-Puduchery-24-9-2011

T.M. Krishna’s concert at Bhairavi Puduchery on24-9-2011.

T.M. Krishna—Vocal
R.K. Sriramkumar—violin.
Manoj Siva –Mrudangam.
Chandrasekara Sarma- Ghatam.
The list of items is given below seriatim:
-Swararagasudha(N, S) Sankarabharanam
-Marivere (R, S) Anandabhairavi
-Suttum vizhi chudardhan- (bilahari, bhairavi sama vasantha)
-Veenabheri venu- Dikshitar –Abheri
-Va muruga va – begada- (ragam, niraval at themadura, swaram) a composition of Venugopal- Rupakam – thani
-Shanthakaraam-Slokam ragamalikai –latangi, hindolam,charukesi,Dharbarikanada- GovardhanaGiridhari of Narayanathirthar
-Chinnanchiru kiliye-in Chalanata, Hamirkalyani,Kharaharapriya, mukhari,begada,boopalam.
-Yamunakalyani-in mantrastayi totally submerged in violin bowing that the lyrics were not discernible
Shakthi sahitha Ganapathy—sankarabharanam
Bhavamana—Sowrashtram.
The first two items could not set the appropriate tempo to the concert though RKS gave lot of prop up support in violin.T M K warmed up his throat with sips of hot water and acquired his usual mastery from the next number onwards. The precocious raga malika was wowen on a different loom:first came 5 mts alapana of bilahari . When the audience was expecting a weighty kriti like dorakuna.. the hue of the alapana changed revealing a beautiful bhairavi which after 5 minutes turned into sama and ended up with vasantha. The surprised audience was treated with Bharathi’s immortal composition.T M K has aptly chosen bilahari for vizhichudar.Pattukaruneela pudavai sizzled in bhairavi, Sundara punngaidhan bewitchingly lured in sama and
Kolakuyilosai came floating in vasantha. For each raga changeTMK adorned each couplet with a colourful bouquet of sprightly swaras. It was well received by the rasikas.
Begada received detailed treatment with elaborate alapana niraval at themadura and fireworks of long complex swara cascades like courtalam falls with bursts of sharp rise to higher octaves typical of TMK.The tamil composition of va muruga va was by Venugopal,he announced. The Rupakam thani by Manoj Siva was plainly academic. Chandrasekara sharma handled the ghatam with timid restraint.
Next came the Vishnu Dyana slokam Santhakaram in ragamalika with latangi, hindolam, charukesi dharbari kanada followed by Govardhana Giridhari of Narayana theerthar
Bhairavi members were happy( 11sept being the date when the poet attained immortality ) when TMK sang another composition of Bharathi, Chinnanchiru kiliye clad in chalanata hamirkalyani, kharaharapriya mukhari, begada and boopalam.
The last item of the concert was a brisk Shakthi Sahitha ganapathy, i think this is Dishithar’s composition in shankarabharanam in tisra nadai for which it is said that Dikshithar got inspired from a western note. The concert which began with shankarabharanam ended with shankarabharanam and this reminded the “circular plays” in western theatre with the last scene being the same as the first scene and the last dialogue being the same as the first beginning dialogue When the mangalam was sung sharp at 905pm ( though the concert started 45 mts late), the audience was till in their seat dharna-like as though it wanted more.

Ah! I went by Ponbhairavi's mentioning the 11th, and overlooked the date of the concert :tmi:
He meant--in the month of September of course, and both of us, like many of us here, love to hear Bharathi all through the year in concerts--not just in Puduvai but everywhere!
I thought the concert took place on the 11th, and the review came late.

PBhairavi,
So, for the Bhairavi Music Circle, the evening was complete with a joined-together circle of SankarAbharaNam--no wonder, the audience kept to their seats, thinking that there was going to be a fresh beginning and ending round of another rAgam!

Arasi madam,
Nice observation. Bhairavi is a circle, a music circle. This concert was a circle starting and ending with shankarabharanam. September being the month when Bhairavi was started(Navarathri), It has completed29 circles of years and is entering its 30th year under the dynamic and resourceful secretaryship of prof Mahalingam. Pl do visit our blogspot.

PavamAna= correction noted. Thanks Sinduja for having brought out another coincidence. too bad that it had not occurred to me.
Shankar, you are perfectly correct. The first concert was by smt Mani krishnaswamy with Kesavalu and Ramanathapuram Kandaswamy. The venue school hall also continues to be the same. I would look up if any photograph is there. I suppose you were then at Jipmer where I was teaching French.

Dear Sri Ponbhairavi,
I am happy to note your kind words about the secretary. I am of the very strong opinion that no individual can uplift the image of any organization. (of course, an individual can demolish the institution or sabha and whatsoever). The cooperation of the members and the other office bearers are very essential. That way I am very fortunate. Very often I compare an organization to the top (in Tamil Pambaram) The top cannot rotate by itself. The speed of the rotation dependents on the tightness (here I call it cooperation) of the rope (Sattai). The members are the rope (Sattai) and the secretary is just a top. If the secretary is fast the credit goes to the rope which is tight and close. My hats off to the members of bhairavi. I feel that it is not out of place to mentionThree points about the members of bhairavi. (1) The members never even gossip from the beginning to the end of the concert. (2) Our members never move out when mangalam is being sung. They give importance to mangalam as the people give importance to National Anthem. (3) There will never be exodus of members when the thaniavarnathanam begins. we all feel that it is an insult to the mrudangam artist. ( in fact this time I heard T.M. Krisha telling the mrudangam artist Mr. Manoj Siva "Why don't you continue ? all are sitting ." ) When I heard it I was so proud of our members . A good culture.
