The entire musical fraternity consider singing in the Music Academy as a special event and strive to give their best. In the afternoon concerts which are free, there is always a very good attendance which one does not normally meet with in any other place. The audience is also knowledgeable and interested in music.

Smt Gayathri Venkataraghavan sang to an audience of more than 800. The ground floor was fairly full with a good number in the balcony also... She sang with her usual aplomb, the magnificient voice in all its splendour.

Starting with a varanm by her Guru Sundaresan in Bahudari, she sang a well conceived Ramanatham bhaje ham (kasiramakriya), raced through Vidajalathura (Janaranjani), before settling down to a very relaxed and
most enjoyable Dhanyasi. Meena Lochana Brova was sung emphasising its emotional content . With musical acumen, she did not sing any swaras to this krithi. It would have spoilt the mood.

Surprisingly, she next sang Papanasam Sivan’s “Chidambaramâ€

Yes indeed it was a delightful and satisfying concert. Vidjalathura and Chidambaram were sung at rollicking pace but as manoranjitham rightly said she has such a magnficent voice which brought about utmost clarity even at that pace. Truly a wonderfully gifted artist!

This year the audio system in the Academy, is just magnificient. Gone are the days when vidwans and well wishers(!) used to dictate the noise levels. Fidelity is also very high. so, no wonder that it was excellent when Gayathri sang.

Thanks for the review. I really think that GV should be promoted to the evening slots. She is a very talented vocalist.

The review of this concert in today's The Hindu. One has to agree with the reviewer on Gayathri's list!! Excellent selection indeed! She is definitely one of the brightest stars in the carnatic music firmament!

Enjoyed her concert thoroughly! A delightful voice and nidAnam with such bhAvam in her rendering. Even her fast renderings had grace. Yes, I liked her eschewing kapata nAtaka line for niraval as well. She is like a breath of fresh air when many young talented female singers cannot but emulate and imitate one of our popular singers...

I completely agree - one of the best women artistes today - it is distressing to note that she is still being given afternoon slots (which results in my missing many of them)
