Gobilalitha sadabhishekam concert: Vid. Sri. R. Suryaprakash
The sadabhishekam of my father Gobilalitha was celebrated yesterday (18 October 2011).
We were fortunate to be treated to some exceptional music by my friend, wonderful person, frontline musician and fellow rasikas.org member, Vidwan. Sri. R. Suryaprakash. He was most ably accompanied by Vidushi. Smt. Nalina Mohan on the violin and by Vidwan Sri. H.S. Sudhindra on the mridangam in Tippasandra Bangalore
Despite a few technical glitches, the extremely gracious artists created a concert that was simply spellbinding to say the least and even people who rarely listen to CM sat through the entire concert and enjoyed the proceedings. What amazed me about Vid. Suryaprakash (and the accompanying artists) is that even in the face of technical issues, there were no half-measures and he gave 100% with the greatest devotion to the art and the audience. The concert could have just as well been at Music Academy or MFA....
I wouldn't call this a review but more of a songlist and some notes
1. Shivatraya (Nattai, Swarna Venkatesa Dikshitar) This kriti started with a slokam and was an excellent start to the concert. The kriti ended with a nice round of kalpanaswarams.
2. Kayarohanesam (Karnataka Devagandhari) the master piece of MD was sung at the most leisurely pace I have heard it rendered.
3. Vasudevayani (Kalyani; Thyagaraja) Sri. Suryaprakash started with a beautiful and elaborate alapanai followed by the kriti neraval and swarams.
4. Janani Ninnuvina (Reeti Gowla; Subbaraya Sastri). Brought tears to a number of individuals, I need not say more.
5. Manavyalakinchara (Nalinakanti; Thyararajar): Sri. Suryaprakash from the slowest Kayarohanesam, went to the fastest tempo Nalinakanti. The refreshed artists launched into the two main pieces of the evening
6. Yaaro Ivar Yaaro (Bhairavi; Arunachala kavi): Sri Suryaprakash started with a beautiful alapanai and slokam in Bhairavi followed by this masterpiece. The kriti was followed by a short but very enjoyable Thani by Sri. Sudhindra.
7. RTP in Maand: in Adi talam "Brammanda Swarupa Maruti Bala Maruti Jaya Jaya"; The RTP was the highlight of the evening and was spectacular for the exposition of numerous unusual and "folk" aspects on Maand. The pallavi had the raga mudhirai woven into it. Ragamalika swarams in Durbari, Mohanam and Madhyamavati followed this beautiful RTP. The returns of Smt. Nalina Mohan, who was exceptional throughout, during the taanam drew many rounds of applause.
8. Aaj Aye (Mishra Pahadi) rendered with the "folk" aspects of this ragam. At this point I was getting a bit nervous since Sri. Suryaprakash had a train to catch, but such was his devotion that he went on with 4 more songs, also accommodating a request to sing an MKT song.
9. MKT songs Annaiyum Thandaiyum
10. Krishna Mukunda
11. The concert was then rounded off with Karpagame Kan paarai (Madhyamavati) a tirupugazh and mangalam.
In all the concert was truly brilliant and was enjoyed by a cross section of audience ranging from knowledgeable rasikas to those who only listen to CM in passing.
The best part of it was that at 80, there couldn't have been a better gift for Gobilalitha.

Thanks. Lakshman, Mohan, Punarvasu. .Actually the calendar b'day was on 4th for which many friends have already sent messages. y'day was the star b'day, hence the religious function which i wanted to be done in a simple manner with homams etc turned out to be a large scale celebration thanks to my 2 daughters and son who disobeyed (?) my orders!!!. but their disobedience resulted in a grand performance by Sri Suryaprakash

Kamalamba - thank you for the review. I am curious to know the slOkam that preceded the description of sItA in yAro ivar yArO (or was it the verse from kamba rAmAyaNam - aNNalum nOkkinAn, avaLum nOkkinAL...).

Kamalamba (Mohan),
A lovely gesture from you and your siblings to include Surya's music--iSai virundu (musical feast) to the celebrations.
GBL,
Far better treat than those two sweets on the banana leaf, don't you agree?!! An added musical treat for all who had gathered...
Only regret is, your birthday comes too early for me to make it--before I come to Bengaluru!
Congratulations to you and Lalitha. Once again, have many more healthy, happy years, both of you! Music certainly keeps us all young

May be just a coincidence , bala mudra is apt for shri balasubramaniam(?n), so raga mudra of your dad's name is partly there. Maand may be a difficult raga to sing a RTP , closeness to quite a few ragas like niroshta etc could be a tight rope walk.
gobilalitha Sir
Best wishes on your 80th Birthday

Thanks all
rshankar, the slokam was from Vaidehi Sahitam. I will find out details and post.
rajeshnat, indeed the bAla part of bAla mAruti was an appropriate nAmamudrai as the rAga mudhirai was.
Upon my request Suryaprakash has given me a recording of the entire concert and is willing for me to share the entire concert with fellow members, considering the occasion of Sadabhishekam.
I will post this soon.
