Sikkil Gurucharan in Cary, NC on 16th Oct' 2011

Post by hamirkalyani123 »

Accompanied by H.K Venkataraman (Violin) and Thiruvarur Bhakthavatsalam (Mridangam) held at Bond Park Community Center, Cary.

1. Kanada Varnam
2. Sidhi Vinayakam (Mohana Kalyani - Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar)
3. Hiranmayim Lakshmim (Lalitha - Dikshitar)
4. Raghunadha Nannu (Gurucharan announced it as Swara Ranjani - composer is Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar)

I did listen to this composition before, thanks to Smt. Manda Sudharani garu's album where it is mentioned as Soora Ranjani and the composer mentioned as Ramnad Srinivasa Iyengar. The composer possibly is same with Poochi being a place name. Not sure. But the raga name I am not sure which one is correct. When I look around for this composition on google, I found the following link which also says it as
Soora Ranjani. It is possible I may have heard Gurucharan wrongly.

5. Rama Neeyada (Kharaharapriya, Tyagaraja)
After a very elaborate alapana, he told the audience, "Don't know which one amongst all the famous compositions of Tyagaraja to sing, since I am equally confused as you are, but he asked the audience to raise their hands whether it should be Pakkala Nialabadi, Rama Neeyada, Nadachi Nadachi etc. and he finally settled down to Rama Neeyada etc.

Very nicely rendered and he took the charanam "tana saukhyamu" for niraval. tani avartanam by Sri Bhakthavatsalam followed right after this. His diction and clarity in presentation of Telugu compositions is very very good, considering his mother tongue is Tamil. I am listening to his live concert first time around, and this certainly would not be the last. I hope to listen to many more of his in future. I had to leave right after the Tani avartanam for personal reasons, but my friend helped me fill up the rest of items as follows. Everyone in this group knows the Mridangam maestro Sri Bhakthavatsalam's capabilities and how much energy he brings into the concert. So, not much there.

6. Ashtapathy - set by Tanjore Kalyanaraman
7. RTP in Danyasi in Tisra Nadai
8. Virutham
9. Thillana
10. Mangalam

Not sure of the ragas for items 6, 8 and 9 and if there is ragamalika for RTP. Others in this group who have attended can help fill up this information. I also understand from Gurucharan's website that this is his last program of the USA tour and what a way to finish :D

Tx for your review, Poochi is not the name of the place ,Since Ramnad Srinivasa IyengAr had a sareeram like a bee and hence he was nicknamed as Poochi Srinivasa IyengAr.
