Rasikapriya 2011 awards announcement
Rasikas,
Every year, on behalf of members of discussion groups associated with sangeethapriya.org, Rasikapriya Award is being is given to individuals who have contributed selflessly towards the cause of music and music community.
For 2011, the awardees will be:
1) Dr.K.B.Gopalam (alias) Vijayagopal - (Uploader category)
With a PhD in Biochemical Genetics, Dr Vijayagopal , a music connoisseur, has served All India Radio in various capacities such as Science Officer, Deputy Director and Director. He has been contributing to carnatic music community through his blog http://lokabhiramam.blogspot.com and through sangeethapriya.org. Dr Vijayagopal has a web folder http://www.sangeethamshare.org/vijayagopal through which he has shared recordings of legends as well as some outstanding individuals of Andhra Pradesh, who are not well known in Chennai circuit (such as Karlapalem Chandramaouli, Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao). He has shared 315 quality concerts , to date.
2) S.Ramakrishnan - (Other service to music category)
Yes, our own srkris , who needs no introduction in this forum. (For those who have recently joined rasikas.org, Sri Ramakrishnan runs rasikas.org , in short. ) Moderating a forum such as this is not a trivial task, considering the diverse needs , tastes , intellectual and emotional quotients of the members. We were not able to think of a better candidate for "Other service to music" category.
Congrats to both of them. Award function will be during early 2012. Will send the invite to forum members around that time.

Congratulations to both awardees.
I am absolutely delighted to see the work of skris recognised. The work of forum founders (in general, not just this one) and administrators is largely silent and hidden in the background, only to dragged into the view when criticism or complaint is the order of the day.
What a wonderful thing to happen!

Please see This Thread for an official announcement and some more reactions.
I'm delighted for skris, as such work usually goes unrecognised.
In a way, too, it is a recognition of our entire site and community.

srkris,
Delighted to hear that you and Dr. Vijayagopal are the recipients of this year's prestigious Rasikapriya awards.
May your good work continue with the help of a hard-working team at the forum. This award recognizes you (the invisible!) and also the nearly invisible others! Well, what the invisible folks do (all the hard work) goes unappreciated at times, but I am sure there are many silent readers as well, who congratulate you on this award.
Lakshman and DRS have already been recognized for their work by this award.
Long live Rasikas.org
And Sangeethapriya!

Let us not forget that srkris is also an outstanding researcher in Indology with particular reference to linguistics.
He is also a devoted fan of Chembai for whose memory he maintains a website
http://chembai.com/
He is also the main architect of the Carnatic wiki though it is dormant at present.
He has invested uncountable hours maintaining single-handed this Forum undaunted through several cycles of adversity. This Forum which came alive at the right time when Sangeetham.com disappeared is serving as the prime outlet for exchange of information among CM Lovers from every corner of the world.
By honouring him through this award the global community of Rasikas are honouring themselves; indeed honouring CM as srkris has already acknowledged.
Dear Chembai (which was the original pen-name of srkris during sangeetham.com days!)
We legitimately feel proud on this recognition of your signal effort in the propagation of CM awareness through the Web and of our being part of rasikas.org
Thank you

Thanks again everyone. Each of your contributions to this website is instrumental. I feel people like CML, Arasi and VK are more popular representatives (I get honoured like the president when we have elected representatives in the government, if you see the analogy). We should have our own awards perhaps, and we dont have a dearth of probable recipients. Perhaps it can coincide with the annual meet

A few other names come to mind. Uday, Nick, Keerthi, now RaviSri and many many others...I don't think an attempt at listing special members of the rasikas.org family will ever complete the list. Each member brings something to share, inform, or is instrumental in starting an interesting discussion.
We seniors, headed by Veeyens think of Rasikas.org as our family. Thanks to all the members who make us feel at home.

My nearly-namesake is, in spite of his work commitments, not only loves CM, but is prepared to go to the nth degree to cherish it. His many reviews (one of a kind) are proof to that. He is an active member of the forum, and has been part of it from the very start. As intense as he is in his feeling and expression for music, his generosity in spirit is known even to those who don't know him personally--particularly in taking criticism in the right spirit and of course, he's an action man.
An example: when those who wanted to buy Yadugiri Ammal's bhArathi ninaivugaL in the original tamizh version found out that it was out of print, Rajesh persuaded the publisher to print a hundred copies by paying him for it out of his own pocket. He has all those copies with him now. The Rasikas Meeting in Chennai is where the book can be bought, to start with. I hope this, one of his many services to our members does not go to waste.
Rajesh, if you are our (my) cheer leader, I'm yours

In spite of all the names we have been mentioning, many other names still have not made the list--which goes to prove that we all contribute to the forum in our own ways and each one has a part in making this train of music-appreciation chug along merrily, ignoring little hitches here and there. That's the reason why we cannot name any one member a star.

This may have already have been mentioned, but, this forum is also very indebted to rasikas who are also performing artists in their own rights, like, vidyArthi (Sri NSG), Smt. GV, Mohan, Prashant, Smt. Radha Bhaskar, Smt. Radhika Rajnarayan, Sri Ravikiran, the Cranatics Bros, the younger generation (represented by tyagaraja dAsa, Abhishek Iyer from Toronto etc), and so many dancers like Parimal, Poonam, Umesh, Ganesh, Sheela, Radhika, and as I said, many, many more... Some of these people may not post much, but when they do, it is always interesting. Another person whose posts I find uniformly informative is thenpaanam...

A few Rasikas collect information and provide them to rasikas. This service of providing information or references really helps, and this is laudable. And a few Rasikas make this forum lively by regular pariticipation, which is also appreciable.
But there are a few who put in creative efforts which add new material to the CM field. For example, rshankar's expert translations of Tamil krits is an original effort. This and other similar contributions are commendable and deserve due recognition.

PB,
Ravi's work, if we care to look at the volume of it over the years (volumes filling?)is nothing but the result of his love for lyrics, music and dance. A young doctor like him is busy enough and does not have to oblige every rasikA and dancer's request for explaining the finer points of a song in his excellent translations.
Ravi,
You are so right. Many names have not been mentioned of those who make Rasikas.org a worthy place to come to.
When I said the Milky Way, I meant it in the sense that we are all part of it, the object of our being members here means that we bring our collective knowledge and sensibilities to share with each other. Of course, stars are stars, shining even among mere rasikAs like us. Vidyaarthi, Ravi Kiran, Surya, kavi Erode and others are shining stars.
The rewards are what we gain from Rasikas where each and everyone of us gets richly rewarded. That's why I do not think much about a rewards ceremony. We are far too many in number and even if umpteen categories are mentioned, we will still be leaving out many worthy individuals. After so many posts from so many of us, we still haven't exhausted the names of all our worthy members.
My strength as a member is mostly in the number of posts. Yes, I'm the queen when it comes to the count in posts!
Every time I come across an educative or inspiring post, I exclaim, ah, so and so, haven't read one of his/her posts in a while. How good he/she is!
Each and every member counts--the old and the new. Those special ones who were with us, who still are, and those to come. So, to me, Rasikas.org is an on going thing, and that's how it should be...
