madhyamAvati sketch

It was a satisfying concert. The handling of veena was deft and hearteningly forceful. I enjoyed the bEgaDe, tODi (especially) and sahAna. The sahAna kriti (wasn't familiar to me) was good too. The neravals were too brief for my liking (I would have preferred if tODi alone had a longer neraval -- I remember someone on this forum saying that neraval should absolutely not be done less-than-wholeheartedly). The swarams were very good, if sometimes an Avartanam too long. The swarams to madhyamAvati included some tishra and khaNDanaDai rounds, and (sadly) also a rAgamAlika into some rAgams like sAramati. Some rAgam, then sAramati, and then a R3-harikAmbhoji, whatever it is called.

The tani was also very good. Sri Krishna naturally enjoyed playing to an audience which included Vidwans BK Chandramouli, M Vasudeva Rao and HS Sudhindra. Apart from beautiful kOrvais I really can't talk in depth about (but Sri HSS later mentioned of past greats like PMI who have used similar things), the koraippu included sudden bursts in khaNDa naDai to which Sri Shashi Shankar responded aptly, like an alert tiger.

Thanks for the succinct review, Srikant.

Nice to see madhyamAvati on a list - been a while.

How was the malayamArutam? I haven't heard (of) this krithi.

Good to read about this concert!

Pushpa Kashinath is from the illustrious Harmonium Arunachalappa family.

V Krishna is carrying on his father Bangalore K Venkataram's legacy (as is his sister Kalavathi Avadhoot).

I wonder if Tumkur Shashi Shankar is related to Tumkur Ravi Shankar?

Jesudas used to sing the malayamAruta item often.

Sreeni Rajarao,

Thank you for the information on the musicians.

Regarding dhanyuDevvaDo, it is a nice Patnam kriti, which offers a change from manasA eTu lOrtunE, just like sandEhamu dIrpavayya would offer such a nice change from kOrina varamosagumayya. Incidentally, sandEhamu dIrpavayya is the first time I took notice of rAmapriya ... it was an SRJ concert-cum-lecdem which also featured the beautiful enta bhAgyamu (sAranga). Sri S Varadarajan and Sri Umayalpuram Mali accompanied SRJ in it.
