TVS - Bharat Sangeet Utsav - 01/11 - NGS

Post by ganeshkant »

Vocal support:mahAdevan sankaranArAyanan

Mri:Thiruvarur Bhakthavathsalam
Vio:S.Varadarajan
Ghatam:Tripunithura Radhakrishnan

I have written more than ones in this forum about my love for TVS.He may not be fulfilling my demands yet my love to him is unflinching because its pure and doesn’t expect any thing in return. Not only to him if I love some one I love them unconditionally.Even if they treat me badly still I love them.Probably they are treating me for my worth but should I not treat them for their worth ? I do that by showing them my immeasurable love.

Coming back to the concert,TVS had a slightly impaired voice but that didn’t deter the lion from roaring.
The song list.

Vallabha nAyakasya – bEgada – (Brief sketch,S)
jAnaki ramana – Sudhdha seemandhini – (N@rathnanalinadhara,S)
vaLLi nAyakanE – shanmukhapriya – (R,N,S)
mee valla – kApi – R
kapAli – mOhanam – (R,S,T)
veLLai thAmarai – bhimplAs
vEyuru thOli pangan – behAg
Adum chidambaramO - behAg
Virutham in bAgeshri,hamsAnandhi and MadhyamAvati
karpakamE – madhyamAvathi
pavamAna

TVS enthralled the audience by his rich manOdharmam when he sang the rAgams bEgada (though brief),shanmukhapriya and mOhanam. The niraval @ rathnanalina and the svarams that followed were erudite.mahAdevan came out with a competent performance with his young & fresh voice singing in tandem with his father. His alApanai of kApi was also good despite a bit shaky start.MahAdevan has to improve his confidence level and I think he will be just unstoppable like his illustrious father.

The virutham in bEhag was again note worthy.karpakamE was sung as usual in a racy speed. Why every one is racing this song which has beautiful, prayful and absorbing lines ! I want some one to sing this in a slower tempo and enjoy its bhAvam.Let me see.

SV's version of Shanmukhapriya,kApi & mOhanam was excellent and drew many sabashs from the main artist. The percussion by Bhakthavathsalam was crisp throughout and his tani with Radhakrishnan drew thundering applauses.

So folks,it was a great concert and I am really happy to have attended this one.

BSU is a real boon to music lovers and probably I will write short summaries an other concerts I attended.

ganeshkant,

I find Mahadevan's vocalization more similar to NSG than TVS, somehow!

I don't think vallabha nAyakasya, jAnaki ramaNa are common TVS items. Not sure about vaLLi nAyakanE. mI valla is one of the most welcome kApi kritis for me. :D My favourite song in kApi is parulana mATa.

I listened up to Sri Varadu's ShaNmukhapriya AlApanai.

I craved a darbAr after the jAnaki ramaNa. darbAr is a favourite rAgam of mine that TVS sings somewhat often -- rAmAbhirAma, kShEmam kuru gOpAla and even munduvenuka I think.

The Shanmukhapriya AlApanais and bEgaDa swarams were very good.

All these kritis appear in a TVS concert in good frequency. In fact it was MMI who gave life to jAnaki ramana.Chembai also used to sing and naturally KJY sings this frequently. In fact I have heard TVS sing bEgada as sub main long back in a sastry hall concert. Can't remember the kriti.Of course TVS excels in Darbar.

I was not there. However, going through the list of songs, I get a feeling " have I not heard the same concert before, more than once ?" Is it just me ?

Perhaps not. People tell me that he repeats a lot of songs. They have seen him for more years and for more concerts than I have. None the less, I have have never been to a TVS concert that I have not enjoyed, and his music is always uplifting.

If having a bad memory helps me to enjoy TVS three or four times a year ... I'll stick with the bad memory :)

When TVS gets into a mood, his alapanais can be unique. I have heard a Bhairavi which was so bhava laden that no one can come near that standard. We can learn what manodharmam means when we hear concerts like that. It seems unfair to keep concentrating on the fact that his song set is oft repeated. He makes it deliberately so.

How many can present a top class sarva laghu swarprasthara as TVS? You need not have to physically put thaaLam because of the naturally swinging rhythm.

My only grievance is that his Chennai concerts are far far superior to his Bangalore ones. Or could it be because that I am more relaxed in Chennai :)

Our praNaams to this great artist- a rare combination of high humility and high self-confidence.
