ThiruvayAru ThyAgarAja ArAdhana 2012

Post by Sundara Rajan »

Could any one please provide information about date of the next ArAdhna at ThiruvayAru ? I guess that the Pushya krishna panchami falls on February 09, 2012. But I am not sure about the Telugu ChandramAna calendar. Thanks.

Does anyone know when does the festival start/end? I cant find this info anywhere on the web.
And I would also appreciate if somebody shares his experiences of reaching and staying there.

Thank you.

The ArAdhana festival nowadays starts four days ahead of ArAdhana day( panchami) and culminates on the Panchami evening. ThiruvayAru was a small village with no hotels/motels to stay 50+ years ago, when I attended. We used to sleep on thiNNais of private houses in the agrahAram. Now there may be better staying facilities, I guess. The nearest towns are TiruvArUr and ThanjAvUr where, I am sure there are good accommodations and transportations to ThiruvayAru.

No..not really. Tanjore is the closest big town to find some good place to stay. Book way ahead at a reputed hotel and call a few times to make sure they still have the reservation, just to be sure. Do not book through any of these internet portal services, call the hotel to make the reservation and send the advance to them directly. ( speaking from experience at another town where they gladly took our reservation but conveniently forgot to keep the rooms for us. They did the easy part very well ;) ). There are a few good hotels a mile or so from the palace and the famous saraswathi mahal library.

The nearest bigger towns are ThanjAvur(about ~15KM) and Kumbakonam(~30KM) - ThiruvAaUr is further 35 KM or so away from these two towns. Both ThanjaVur and Kumbakonam have good hotels - but you may need to call them/reserve ahead of time - especially in Kumbakonam(due to increased tourist traffic to Navagraha temples in the last few years :-) )

There are plenty of cab/tourist car services available in both places and I found them to be excellent - you need to specifically ask for A/C car/van though if you prefer one. Non-A/C is the standard unless asked.
