Inspired and guided by Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati’s spiritual approach to living, Kamalalayam Trust, a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization provides holistic education and healthcare, apart from value-based art of living and loving to underprivileged children. Registered in January 2009, and located at Neelangarai, the primary objective of the Kamalalayam trust is to offer enrichment classes in Communicative English, Science and Mathematics to the underprivileged children in the neighbourhood. Weekends are devoted to computer-based education and art. Towards this end, the trust has an able team of volunteers providing primary and secondary school children with academic guidance in different subjects, guidance to improve their reading & writing skills, and introducing them to drawing , painting and teaching them Slokas.
Co-inciding with Gandhi Jayanthi, Oct 2, 2011 was a proud day for Kamalalayam , for , on this day, it completed one year since inception. It was celebration galore, with the children enthusiastically presenting a cultural show with skits, folks dances and other performances. The celebrations also saw a Bharatnatyam dance performance by Ms. Muriel, disciple of Smt. Lavanya Anant.
The grand finale of the Annual Day celebrations was a classical music recital by Dr. Smt. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam & party. She was accompanied by Anayampatti Sri. Venkatasubramaniam on the violin,Erode Sri. Nagaraj on the Mridangam & Trichy Sri. Murali on the Ghatam. The song list consisted of energetic numbers that would enthuse the children – including Maha Ganapathim in Naatai , Alai Paayudhe Kanna in Kaanada, Kurai Ondrum Illai , a Bharatiar Song – Senthamizh Naadenumbodhinile, and a bhajan that the children eagerly sang along with her. It has always been Smt. VS's wish to take the wonderful art form of music as a socially enabling and empowering medium to reach out to more people and the concert at Kamalalayam was definitely an enabler in terms of connecting with the children through the language of music. From Vijayadasami day, Dr. VS is teaching at the Kamalalayam school, pro bono.
Throughout the celebrations, the enthusiasm with which the children performed, as well as the interest they exhibited during the dance and the music performances was astounding. Yes, indeed , it was a very special first birthday for Kamalayam, for, in the deeds of the trust, we saw one important value that Mahatma Gandhi practiced “Be the core of the change you want to see” . Here’s wishing Kamalalayam a fantastic future and many more successful years of service
