Salem R.Sriram - Vocal
V.Anand - Violin
B.Sivaraman - Mridangam
I reached 15-20 minutes late, so probably missed the first one or two pieces. The remaining songs were:
Thyagaraja Yoga Vaibhavam - Anandabhairavi {S}
Mamava Meenakshi - Varali {R,N,S Neraval at "Syame Shankari Digvijaya Pratapini"}
RTP - Kalyani (Pallavi " lambOdara sOdarA navamaNi hara"), rupaka tala
Karpooram Narumo - Kamas {R}
All weighty ragas! The singer took care not to stuff the concert with too many items, since this was just a 1.5 hrs concert. But he managed to sing a short RTP and made a good effort to sustain the interest of the audience throughout, particularly as it was the post-lunch session
I reached the hall at the end of the anandabhairavi kriti, and caught some swara showers for a few minutes, which were rendered very briskly.
Varali alapana was good, and the kriti was sung with a lot of bhava. Contrary to my expectations, there was no Thani avarthanam.
In the RTP, the Tanam (performed with mridangam) was rendered expansively. This is something I liked, particularly as the singer preferred to take the extra effort to go along with the mridangam rather than solo. The effect was obvious. I later asked him to spare me a copy of this performance. There was a tiny Thani (for a few minutes), although no one followed the custom of leaving the hall, as far as I could see. Probably because this was a small bunch of serious rasikas?
The singer wrapped up the performance with "Karpooram Narumo", but here again I thought it would have been better to finish with a mangalam. Strangely, at least in the 2-3 times I have attended Sriram's concerts in the past, I dont think he sang a mangalam for any of his performances.
