Listening to MRS was like listening to his illustrious guru KVN.The disciple is meticulously following his guru’s pATAntharam.
It was just a 90 mins.concert and the artist prudently chose to sing only one song in detail.Todi was treated elaborately exploring all its contours. There were plain phrases, with slight brighas and gamakams, phrases with S,P varjyam, etc. It was presented in all its grandeur.BAK’s version was equally good with a deft bowing.
The earlier items were also dealt with neatly especially the niraval for the sarasAngi song which showed the abundant potential of MRS.
When I entered the hall thinking that who is going to attend a concert that too at a college campus at this odd time (2P.M) I was in for a pleasant surprise. There were about 200 students. But when the concert progressed I understood that most of them were there not by choice and the college admin.sends students of particular classes to each concert. So when I clapped the students also clapped but for the tani Avartanam. The students clapped on their own without my goading; that is the plus with layam.People tend to sway a bit with any rhythmic beat without knowing what it is.
SankaranArayanan played excellently both for songs and in tani.
A 90 mins.concert that gave a satisfaction of a 3 hrs.concert.Items may be less but served sumptuously.

In this short concert, it is noteworthy that MR Subramanian sang two neravals, as a good tribute to Neraval Narayanaswamy. The team of accompanists are really good (R.Sankaranarayanan and BAK)Hope to hear MRS soon.

On a lighter vein, as an artist who sang in the same fest on 6th Dec., I can say that any artist need not worry about the crowd fatcor at Meenakshi college as a good lot of students are made to be "physically" present at the concert. But, it a passive crowd which has very little interest in music and they seem to wait for the concert to get over so that they can go out. Was left wondering which is a better option - to have a handful of knowledgeable rasikas or a large group who do not react at all to your music!
