The concert started off a bit late due to Traffic snarls in T.Nagar. But What a great concert it was. He started off the concert with an excellent virutam on Lord Ganesha to round it off with the famous Bhajamaanasa Vigneshwara manisham of Tulasivanam with brisk and excellent swara patterns weaved with midas touch. Then came sogasu jooda tharama in Kannadagowla where he sang both madyamakala swarams and durita kala swarams. I have always liked his "Ma ga sa sa ri ga" --> sogasu jooda tharama. Then came a short Alapana in Mohana Kalyani with superb phrases. He sang Tamadam Tagadayya of Pallavi Gopalayyar with flair and fluency. The citta Swaras were of rendered with high aesthetic raga value.
Todi followed suit with accent on Raga Bhava. Lesser heard Sarasijanaba Murare of Swati Tirunal in Misra Chaapu tala with nicely brought out sarvalaghu patterns for swaras.
Andolika came as a surprise to me for Raga next to todi as i thought he was going to sing the main as andolika. But he sang Sevikka Vendumayya and sang swaram at 3/4 idam.
Ka Va va was used as a filler before the main item.
Jujawanti or dwijavanti or jay jay vanti (i m not into any controversies when the raga goes into my ears .. hahahaha) was taken up for elaboration. Ah ! what a beauty that he could produce and what melody he could infuse and what harmony he could transport. It was simply great and the veteran excelled in each and every part of the alapana. Dikshitar's Akhilandeshwari kriti came up as a main item and he sang madyama kala swaras and durita kalaswaras with nice patterns that are so much a mark and character of his singing. Virutam, Eppovaruvaro Note and Mangalam are his forte which he sings in most of his concerts. What stood out was Mohana Kalyani, Thodi Andolika and Jujavanti (4 Raga alapanas in about 2.45 mts concert). Awesome energy levels and awesome full-throated singing.
His daughter and son ably assisted him.
Nagai sriram stood out excellent in the alapans but in Jujavanti he stole the show to a thunderous applause.
He is very quiet on stage but quietly he makes his presence felt.
I played tani for jujavanti kriti.
Though the concert started late the veteran did not want to wrap up the concert at about 9.00 or so. He sang till 9.45.
On the whole the concert was an enjoyable one from the one who has won the hearts of many ones.
