This is a video of our lastest SK, Trichy Sankaran speaking in Telugu (didn't know he could do that). The interview has his wife next to him, and he towards the end he refers to their relationship as being brother and sister. Does he mean that in more of an affectionate way, as in the are friendly, or is he being literal and are they actually biologically related? If anyone happens to know, please let me know. Thanks!

He is referring to the various roles they have to assume/play to run the family.

I've seen a video where Ghatam Karthik speaks in Sanskrit.
Perhaps most carnatic musicians are conversant in multiple 'south indian' languages.
Malayalam due to its affinity to Tamil needs no mention.

Isn't Telugu Smt. E. Gayatri's mother tongue?

mri_fan: No, all he means is that as a couple living and breathing music and raising a family in N. America they have had to assume many roles including being each other's parent, sibling, friend etc. He is very thankful to mami for her support in making his career what it is today. He also mentions that she is a good singer, although very modest about her own achievements.
My understanding is that Sri TS has a good working knowledge of Telugu (and possibly other languages too) that he uses extensively in organizing his Carnatic music theory courses at York.

I have some distant and somewhat close relatives of Shri TS as close family friends. One of them was even my classmate at Engg school. I am sure that their mother tongue is telugu but their ancestry is from Trichy for a long time (not sure how many generations). I know also that their family members mostly marry among themselves. So it is highly probable that Shri TS and his wife are related.

Yes, Sankaran sir has his roots in AP. He hails from a Telugu Brahmin community, that's what I've learnt. Not sure about marriage aspects of him and amma (his wife). We call them sir and amma.... that's all. Obviously, I don't need to go that deeptyagarajadasa wrote:I am sure that their mother tongue is telugu but their ancestry is from Trichy for a long time (not sure how many generations).
