Malladi Brothers - Singapore fine arts

Post by kachapah »

Malladi Brothers, M A Sundaresan, Manargudi Easwaran and Trichy Murali.

This is my first contribution to rasikas.
Tatva Loka hall was brimming with people when we went in.
Songlist

1. Asaveri varnam - lalgudi mama's varnam
2. Sri Raghu vara sugunalaya - bhairavi
3. Vasanta ragam, Etla dorikitino, neraval, swaram
4. Sri Kamakshi - devagandhari, swaram, composition of Spencer Venugopal
5. Arunachala Natham - Saranga
6. Ninnu Vina gati nakevaroora - Balahamsa
7. Vidulaku- Mayamalavagowla - ragam, neraval, swaram, tani (main piece)
8. RTP - Ananda Bhairavi. In the Pallavi the ragams were Kalyani, mohanam, kannada(i think)
"Simhapuri Nilaye, murugane, shiva magane, guhane" Kanda jati triputa talam, tisra nadai
9. karpagambike - bilahari
10. saravam brahma mayam - madhuvanti
11. Deva Paramatma - Sindu Bhairavi
12. mangalam

An awesome concert, with the hall full. They sang this anadabhairavi pallavi because Singapore fine arts was having its first season and the presiding diety of Singapore is Muruga. The pallavi was fabulous. The brothers also mentioned that the devagandhari piece was composed by Spencer Venugopal whom their father considers the Shyama Shastry of the modern era. The Mayamalavagowla ragam and swarams was a masterpiece. Sundaresan mama was in a great mood and so was the entire team.
I came back home all wired up to listen to carnatic music for another 3 hours.

3. Vasanta ragam, Etla dorikidhivo- neraval@ pAdhamahimo pedhdhalashirvAdabalamo, swaram

5. Arunachala Natham - Saranga

10. sarvam brahma mayam - madhuvanti
11. Adi deva Paramatma - Sindu Bhairavi
12. mangalam

The Vasanta AlApanai by Ravi Kumar was peppy and the neraval by the bros.was quite absorbing.
It was actually the other bro.Sriramprasad's day.His essays of DevagAndhAri and MMG were sedate and meditative.A high class rendition !

Probably the bros.could have avoided pronouncing nAtham as nAdham.

The RTP was done very fast.So the AB Alapanai was speeded up and didn't have its vishrAnti charm.Any ways it was good though.

MAS excelled throughout.I am yet to see an artist who can challenge MAS.He is as invincible as his uncle MSG.

The percussion by MAE & MM was excellent throughout and the Tani...wah...even a moron like me could enjoy it !

An excellent team work and a great concert !

Two is a crowd, Three is ecstasy. I too attended the concert !!!

Saint Thyagaraja in His kriti "etla dorakitivo" says -

pAda balamO peddalASeervAda
balamO suswarapu
nAda phalamO ....

it means

"Is it because of the might of Your holy feet? or is it because of the strength of blessings of elders?
or is it because of the result of (my Upasana of) Nada of melodious Svara "

Malladi brothers, undoubtedly, has all the three. Another brilliant concert by MBs. Almost 3 hours concert with RTP
despite the fact that the next day, they have a concert at vAni mahAl. It is the second concert of the December
season for them,

Singapore cultural association has conducted this programme at Tatvaloka, Eldams road. Yesterday was the last day of the
programme. This sabha had some excellant concerts like sashank, Gurucharan which I could not attend.

I concur with the experts view above. So, no more additions.

Sometimes. one has to take life as it comes. Coming Saturday, MBs are giving concert at Petachi with Trichy sankaran
EmbAr kannan and Dr.Karthik. Next day, 4.3o slot at MA with Varadarajan, Umayalpuram sivaraman Two concerts
at strategice places with great accompanists less than 24 hours time !!!!. I think they need to plan their schedule.

The MB's are probably among the best of male duo singers. Thanks for the review. Where/what is simhapuri?

Ravi, simhapuri is probably Singapore (in Malay: city [pore/pura] of the lion [singa]).
