Post by kssr »

Bangalore's Nadasurabhi presented the annual award of Sangeetha Surabhi for the year 2011 to Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri.M.S.Gopalakrishnan on the 13th of November 2011. It was followed by his concert with Dr.Narmada and Sri.Suresh.
Here are some photos:

Thanks for the report and photos, KSSR.

How was the concert? MSG doesn't have many concerts scheduled this season, unfortunately. I still remember the madhyamAvati sketch he played at MFAC last year!

The concert was no doubt excellent. Main was Thodi.
Sri.MSG has just completed 80 . He is quite weak and had to be assisted while walking and on to the stage. His playing standard still remains flawless. The old glow still comes to his face while playing.

A very touching scene was when he walked into the hall. After being received by the president of Nadasurabhi (see photo), he walked down the aisle assisted by his son Suresh. As he passed row after row, moving towards the stage, the audience realising his arrival, rose in spontaneous respect also row by row as they saw him cross their row. The awe that our great vidwans inspire in the minds of rasikas is to be seen to be believed.
It is indeed a great gesture for him to have agreed to come to Bangalore to accept the award. But, as I have heard, it is not the awards that honour the artists; it is the artists who honour the awards.

Dr.Narmada has taken over the fast paced MSG baani of playing. I heard her accompany MSG about 10 years back. In these years she has now acquired the dominant position. The junior partner now is her brother Suresh. It was amusing to see her tap him on his back, across the stage with the bow of her violin to convey something. "Dai- Sariya vaasida"- kind of thing!!

Thanks for the recap, kssr. And, er, how did Suresh play?

I think Narmada has come far in recent years. I'm hoping to catch her solo this season.

He is quite OK, actually. In fact he played the full alapana for Mandhari which was quite impressive. As you know, besides the playing skill you also need a certain personal assertiveness to grow in your career.

Narmada is of late accompanying many artists. I heard her on several occasions on the SVBC's Naada Neerajanam accompanying others and in group performances. She is quite good now and absolutely confident.
