May her soul rest in peace. She was the first to dare to breathe contemporary concepts into bharatanATyam.

For some reason, the name of Chandralekha has not been etched in the plaques containing the names of great bharathanatyam dancers. She was perhaps bold in experimenting but that was it. In a sense it is similar to appeals for broadening the appeal of CM to the masses by making it "light". Others might disagree about Chandralekha not being recognized properly. But that is another subject.

What a Contemporary concepts!!!
And why Not ?!!

As contemporary as finding a way of using Dance as as a therapy for children with disability.

Way back in the early 80s, The then Spastic Society of India(Now called Vidyasagar) benefited from Chandralekhas work on the Use of Dance as a form of therapy - a line of work that is being consolidated under the forms of Creative movements.

Silent wreaths were placed on the day of the funeral , by a grateful community -

a community fighting discrimination, neglect , lack of priority with all its might.

Contemporary in the context of a Modern Day sense of commitment to find solutions , rather than tie kids to pillars at home for decades.
Contemporary , in the context of not cursing ones own luck or stars , or even praying for miracles...

Contemporary in the context of leaving a world better than when one entered it ....

Contemporary Indeed......
May her soul rest in peace !!

Disclaimer: I am one of the grateful beneficiaries of Vidyasagar, where My Son (with cerebral palsy) was handled with great care and finesse !
and so most of you can now understand why I enjoy my sons dancing to Shubha Mudgals Barase Barase even though I....:D

I don't know much about dance but I think she was the one who first started using Kalaripayattu in her productions. Nowadays, many bharatnatyam dancers attend Kalaripayattu classes. In that sense, her contribution is not just limited to dance.

True.Very moving.
Thanks RC.
Reminds me of those famous words with which Carl Sanburg opens the last chapter in the biography of Abrahanm Lincoln- the one in which he is slain.
A TREE IS BEST MEASURED , WHEN FALLEN.
