For the past few years Carnatica have been organizing the New Year Eve program. It used to be in North Usman road, T Nagar till last year, and the program in one particular year stretched upto 5 am. T N Krishnan has been a regular (and he regularly plays only vAtApi!), as also many senior vidwans.

The first couple of hours was enjoyable, what with senior artistes participating, and the festival atmosphere resembled what we expect to find at a day-night cricket match in Sydney.

1. T N Krishnan / Viji - Mannargudi Eswaran
- gajAnanayutam ganEshvaram - vEgavAhini

2. N Ramani - R K Shriramkumar - Srimushnam Raja Rao - TVM Rajagopal
- koniyAdina(?) - Bhairavi

3. Ashwini Bide - Katti (harmonium) - Vishwanath Nakod (tabla)
- kabIrdAs bhajan
- abhang

4. Mambalam sisters - Akkarai Swarnalatha - Rajana Swaminathan
- slokam + nIrajadaLanayanA - (?)

5. Gayathri Girish - same team
- Siva panchAksharam (nAgendra hArAya) - rAgamAlika

6. Gayathri Venkataraghavan - Swarnalatha - Neyveli Narayanan - Bangalore Amrit (kanjira)
- aKilANDESvari rakshamAm - Dwijavanti

7. at the stroke of midnight - group singing (all the above except TNK and NR, plus Malladi brothers and their father Suribabu, Vasundhara Rajagopal and Nisha Rajagopal, M Balamuralikrishna etc. )
- maitrim bhajatah
- endarO mahAnubhavulu

8. Malladi Suribabu, Ramkumar and Raviprasad - RKS - Thanjavur Murugabhoopathy
They rendered a slokam followed by a song, which I dont remember now; Sri Suribabu, father of the Malladi brothers, has a powerful voice, even better than his sons' - I was reminded of Nookalagaru and Madurai G S Mani.

9. R K Shriram kumar vocal - Venkatasubramanian - Manoj Siva
- srI rAmam (?)

10. Suryaprakash - Venkatasubramanian - Ganapathiraman
- vEyuRu tOLiBanGan + kANa kaN kODi vENDum - kAmbhoji

11. Master M Balamuralikrishna - Swarnalatha- Rajana
- nIdayarAdA

12. 'musical mimicry' by Sai and Santhanam. I was expecting them to mimic the voices and styles of famous musicians. Instead it turned out to be a cheap show that you surely don't want to hear in the very first hour of an year. (for the record, they were mimicking Pepsi Uma's call-in program)

13. Saindhavi rendered the wonderful, evergreen 'Ennuyirthozhi' from the film Karnan.

I left at this point, helping myself to a glass of pAnakam and some tea sponsored by Krishna sweets.

I take this opportunity to wish all raskias.org members,
a very happy new year full of great concerts and musical discoveries!
