I totally enjoyed the concert by G.S. Mani at the Academy. He is one of a kind. A master of many skills (movie music part of it). Nedunuri, the veteran classicist gave such a performance at the academy another morning. G.S. Mani, a different kind of senior singer gave an exciting performance as well. We were treated with ragas like kOsalam, dEsAkshi and vakuLAbharaNam. Bhairavi, rItigowLai and other staples were there as well. Above all, G.S.Mani's enthusiasm was infectious. It is not as if my being a senior colors my view. Ask anyone among your youth brigade who attended the concert...
By the way, Cool, weren't you there?

I attended a recent NCA concert (my first concert of Shri GS Mani) which I posted. I went up the dias to congragulate him. There were quite a few before me sabha seceretaries etc ... who shook hands . Not sure whether to disturb him or not ,I briefly tried to shake hands with him and said "mamA innikku thAn ungala mudhal tharava ketkaren". He said in his booming voice "appadiyA romba romba santhosham" and he shook so long for additional few seconds, I felt I was the singer and he was the rasika.arasi wrote:G.S.Mani's enthusiasm was infectious.

It is evening , and as I pen these words , the image of a Simple Dhothi Clad Vidwan with a towel neatly folded,on his shoulder , waving a group of us Good Bye ,comes back to me.
A few years ago ,We had spent a fine evening with him ,at his residence.
A few minutes earlier I had asked him permsission to use his tracks here at rasikas.. and he had said : " My Dear Boy ! You are the future. All I can say is that I have achieved the effect of one small lamp.
Light as many more lamps as you wish, with it.-Jyoth Se Jyoth Jagathe Chalo.
A Kulkarni asking me about pure Carnatic Music? What more can I wish for?
God Bless you all..
A Pure Vidwan. One can hear him for hours and hours and still not find a trace of the cinematic liberty in his music.
Doodh Ka Doodh.Pani Ka Pani.
I am not sure if he sang an abhang in the concert you reviewed Arasi, but we must listen -here-to one of his beautiful introductions to abhangs. Will try to dig it out it over the next few days.

Cool,
Wish me less of those senior moments in the new year, would you? It was early in my whirlwind of a concert hopping time that I forget whether he sang an abhang at all! Darn! Yet, as I said, and as even Rajesh seems to agree, it was a flood of spirited singing and I was swept away. By the way, but for a bit at the end, we barely heard the support singer (playing the tambura--his daughter?). He did all the work, and the energy just flowed...
And several filmi music lOg around--all enjoying it. Someone looking like Ilayaraja (I don't know his face that well--was also among them)...
