Kutcheris in and around Anna Nagar

Post by atanasahana »

What with the growing population and increasing interest in Carnatic music, atleast during the December Festival, and with everyone flocking to the main sabhas and most popular artistes ....returning disappointed with no tickets despite standing in the queue since early morning.....its maybe time we think different.

For those residing in and around Anna Nagar, including areas like Ambattur, Mogappair etc....where there are a significant number of rasikas, traveling to a Sabha in the heart of the city is by itself a Herculean task...not to mention the Chennai Metro Rail project which adds to commuters woes. So it would be a real blessing if we have Sabhas operate in Anna Nagar with a little more publicity to attract the rasikas.

The only two musical organisations that I know of, who operate in AnnaNagar are Annanangar Music Circle and Kartik Fine Arts. Annanagar Music circle organises kutcheris once a month at Chinmaya Vidyalaya. Kartik Fine arts organises at Valliammal college for a week in the December Season calling it the "Thamizh Isai Vizha " where artistes perform only in Tamil.

The concerts organised by Kartik Fine Arts are completely free this year and they have a line up of popular musicians like TNS, Lalgudi siblings, Vijayalakshmi Subramaniam etc. The concerts are timed at 4.30 pm and 6.45 pm daily, for a whole week. But despite it being completely free, there is hardly a handful of people in the audi which can accomodate 300 -400 people easily. It is very sad to see that all the vidwat and practice and repertoire of the musicians, are welcomed only by a handful of the population. Can we have more publicity for these concerts? Can we divert the "main sabha popular singers only" mindset to "Why dont you check out other artistes too, afterall its free or very nominal?". Can we not convert Anna Nagar into a musical hub, given the fact that we have an educated elite population living here, all we need is just a forum and some publicity.

It is simple .The artists in their list did not inspire me to attend .I went to MA & NGS and other places to attend concerts from anna nagar.so no point in blaming the crowds.

I was making the same mistake. I thought only the "most popular names" are the "best artistes". Was sadly mistaken. For example, I did not know there was a singer called Geetha Rajasekar, call me a musical illiterate if you will. But I still attended the concert, simply because it was close to home and it was free. And what I witnessed was a MIND BLOWING performance. Absolutely enthralled.....Her "Karthikeya Kangeya Gowri Thanaya" is still ringing in my ears....An effect that even some "so called popular " artistes failed to create....We expect innovations from musicians. As Rasikas, we should also explore and experiment....We may find treasures in unexpected places. What have we got to lose? Its free!

You can also include Villivakkam too. There is also one in DG Vaishnavana college in arumbakkam too . You also have occassionally at Ayyappan temple at annanAgar. Both Villivakkam and Arumbakkam , I have not been to .

annanAgar is fabulous !!! . Special Kudos to Smt padmAvathy who runs Annanagar music circle , but for without her efforts , you may not even have that. She is a great fighter overcoming many odds to conduct music concerts.

Let us take a quick look at the CM target audience. This is more a baseline. Meaning, this is for a normal day, not a festival or any other special day. This is just my model, please feel free to construct your own and test it. As with any such population model, it is approximate, borrowed heavily from various sources, including classical music patterns in other parts of the world.

The thumb rule: 3-25-3. 3% of the population is the CM live concert going target audience. Out of that 25% hear about concerts on a given day and out of that 3% show up. That audience is then shared by the concerts of that day, the popular ones getting more of the average share and less popular ones getting less.

That is an executive summary. The promoters have some control over the middle number but the first and third numbers are hard to change easily and it is more of a long term effort, if at all. But it is definitely worthwhile to work hard to change the first and third numbers.

Now to some details.

There are four types of CM audiences: Attending Live concerts, listening to recordings, listening to Radio and watching TV.
There are big differences in the seriousness of the participation by these types of audiences. Live concert is the most demanding of effort and attention. Also, for elderly people, traveling to concert halls is not that easy. So of the four, % attending live concerts tends to be the lowest percentage and watching it on TV will be the highest percentage.

If you combine all the four types of audiences, we can estimate the audience to be around 25%-30% of the population. But if you consider only the live CM concert percentage, it is around 3%.

That is still a fairly big number for a city like Chennai. That is around 150,000 people. The season may skew that a bit given the influx of visitors. With advertisements in local newspapers, you will make 15% aware of the concert and another 10% through other means. That is the 25% awareness number. That is 37500 people. The attending audience is 3% of that which is 1125. Here is the sobering thought. On a given day, the total number of people attending a CM concert is around 1125. That is shared by all the concerts, a private concert in Chromepet attracting 40 people to a Mylapore Sabha attracting 100 people. ( Top tier ones may get more, the lower tier ones will get less. )

Some festival days may skew this number up, an exciting cricket match may skew this number down. Definitely, December will skew this up tremendously because of the network effect. It is the same effect as buyers at a shop in a typical day vs buyers and sellers on the sandai ( market ) day where the network effect kicks in: Buyers show up because sellers are there, and sellers show up because buyers are there.
