Wishing Padmabhushana Dr RKS a very happy birthday!

Post by ramakriya »

Dr RK Srikanthan was born on the Sankranti day, 1910. Wishing him a very happy birthday, I'll share couple of his interviews.
This is an interview I translated from Kannada to English:

Face-to-face with Sangeetha Kalanidhi: http://neelanjana.wordpress.com/2007/12 ... rikanthan/

A conversation with Dr R K Srikanthan (in Kannada) http://hamsanada.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-post_14.html - I was fortunate enough to conduct this one :)

These were posted here in the forum few years back, but I thought it is appropriate time to share with rasikas, who may have not read them earlier.

Our namaskarams to the great vidwan.
BTW, is the year of his birth 1910 or 1920? I thought it is the latter(remember it bec. that is the year my dear father was born in).

Happy birthday to the one and only RKS! :D
And I'm sure he was born in 1920. If he were born in 1910, he'd be a 101!

PraNAms to the 'amazingly youthful' vidvAn on his birthday!
Had the chance to listen to him nearly two weeks ago. His energy, expertise, strong voice and crystal clear singing make his concerts a rich experience.

Punarvasu, thanks for catching the typo. It is indeed 1920.

Sri RKS is still going strong and here's to many more years of open-throated classical singing from him! I still remember the dEvagAndAri he sang at Mudhra two seasons ago and his Arabhi from this past season too.

I understand that Sri. R K S is scheduled to visit and perform in the U S in March / April this year also (2012). I believe San Diego is on the list for a performance.

Wishing many more years of good health to Sri. R K S and musical treat from him for the rest of us!

What a lovely artist - His music is most appealing for the following reasons - Impeccable Sruti, measured alapana/nereval/swaras, a very very vast repertoire, no gimmickry. In summary ever green music and musician.
I wish him many many happy returns and a very healthy life treating us with lovely music for many more years to come.

Pranams to a Great Nadopasaka. As my wife always tells me hearing him one would swear that this is how Saint Thyagaraja himself would have sung the piece. Pitch perfect, kalapramanam like an anchor, aCOMPLEAT Musician in every sense of the word--I first heard him in Chennai during the Academy season in the Fifties(the concert was in the PS High School because MA's building was not ready)--CACM(VKV) might remember!!!.He was accompanied by I think Papa Sir and Palghat mani Iyer--an experiment that the MA attempted to attract crowds for budding junior artistes like KVN,RKS and Ramnad Krishnan,MDR et al --because the afternoon slots that were given to the artistes did not attract much of a crowd despite the talent of the artistes and the evening slots were filled by the Jambavans of that!! Ofcourse the experiment could not be sustained every year after that but then artistes like RKS/KVN/MDR/RK did get noticed and got lots of opportunities subsequently .

May Sri RKS continue to pursue his Nadopasana enetrtaining us all!!! May GOD give him the strength and vitality to pursue his dreams!!!
