Re: Suryaprakash@rathnagireeshwarar temple on Feb 09th,2012
This was part of mahasivArathri celebrations and this concert had a very heterogeneous spread of composers. Brief Highlights were
# THe start in Nattai was really good , I am just beginning to like this sivathraya as much as say a sahaseeruhasuna , expecially few rounds of cittaswaras makes it bit more a kalaikattufying nAttai. Lavanya rAmA in poornashadjam was brief and well done , this krithi is one where I feel apart from a rare and wonderful ramnad krishnan rendition , other musicians have a lot to catch up .
# ShanmughapriyA was indeed the pick of the day, the alApana was wonderful-brigha sparkling like Tanjore S kalyanaraman style ,The vallinAyakanE rendition with a round of swaras was really brilliant team work with a really right controlled aggression. Nagai sriram's reply and razor sharp response really uplifted the concert.
# The slow and fast numbers before main had a bit of up and down experience within each of those numbers . I felt the SS's lalita song and neraval had a little extra ounce of layam by Shri raO and that did not bring up that usual ecstasy that lalita brings , nevertheless quite passable . The dazzling karunalaya nidhiyE did not have the usual fast paced swara rendition.
# KAmbOdhi alApana had a lot of manOdharma and it was lovely. The usually expressive KAmbOdhi becomes most expressive with this PapanAsam Sivan krithi of KAna kaNN KOTi vEnDum , and it was very well dwelt . The neraval started well as with swaras , but in the 2nd speed of swaras, I felt the ensemble went loud.
# All the tukkadas were wonderful and they just calmed after the stormbodhi . I particularly liked the KAdaLAgi kasindu(tevaram) where the start was in bhairavi (IIRC tevaram was originally tuned in rAgA bhairavi,I can be corrected if i am wrong) and then ending with a nice round of sindubhairavi thru hameer was very aesthetic. The varugalAmO in faceless MAnji always adds a touch of serenity , to many faces of rasikas, there was a touch of KVN-vocal honesty in the rendition.
# NAgai Sriram lifted the concert with his really wonderful play, his replies are razor sharp and he is able to play almost all sangathis of the vocalist in a quick manner passing so swiftly the baton back to the singer.
# In the percussion, the patterns of Rao always had his intellect , I did found he was bit loud in tani, but the KAMbODHI itself with tani was enjoyed by the audience (I guess there is some magic in that sivan's masterpiece KAna kann kOdi). Few touches of shri rAjA Rao where he played only in the tOppi was brilliant and very different from most other mrudangam artists, the artistry of tOppi was nice .Nerukunam shankar gave able support in the tani , but in the first half he had more than the usual upapakkavadhya kanjira restraint.
Overall a very good to excellent concert.
