Oh, how sad: I think you would have enjoyed it very much.

It was an evening of superb and beautiful music.

This is a very gifted, talented, creative young man. I'm not sure how much he managed to really realise that the microphone in front of his mouth was there for recording only. I fear that he has acquired the habit of only projecting his voice that three inches to a mic, or at, times, even keeping it captive in the back of his throat. He produces a fine sound, though, from slapping his leg! These are things that matter so much less in the usual mic/PA concert hall, where the voice is amplified and the other noises are (hopefully) not. Oli is putting their performers in an unusual situation: it is just a shame that most of them won't actually get much more practice at this micless situation.

If the singer was not projecting his voice to our ears, we had to make the effort to project our hearing. Quibble as I may about matters of presentation and technique, I was never in any doubt that it was worth it. There was so much delicacy in this artist's delivery, particularly in his manodharma, which was especially beautiful. We had to turn up the ears to hear it, but would some of that detail have been lost completely to the usual-standard PA system. I'm afraid that it would.

Another great Oli Concert. We have to wait until June for the next...
